Absolutely loved the place/food. Appetizer, salad, and main dishes where great. Only piece that I'd only give 'average' to is the bread, not that it was bad just only part that wasn't impressive. Price to value was great as well. Chain restaurant prices (think olive garden, pasta house) but significantly better quality and flavor. Will definitely be back when in the area.
Had a great meal served for a party of 6. They are well known for their pizzas and their pasta dishes. Very much enjoyed the gouse salad as well as the toasted raviolis. Very much appreciated being able to make a reservation and tables being socially distanced. Excellent wait staff.
I am from Memphis and came to St. Louis for my birthday this was my last day in the city and wanted some Italian food! This has been the best choice I’ve ever made when choosing Italian ! The food was beyond amazing and authentic! It was worth every dime spent and I have never tasted Italian so pure fresh and authentic and still seasoned to perfection. I will be back again! Matt was an awesome and kind server. I am still in total shock. I love this place. ??
We had a party of six and everyone ordered something different, so we could each try a bite or two of each other's meals. We also ordered a couple of appetizers, a couple bottles of wine, and a couple desserts. Not one item disappointed...everything was SO delicious! In fact, the ONLY place we've had better Italian food was in Italy.
And Matt, our waiter, was top notch! He was fun, conversational, helpful, and did an incredible job!
We ordered to go for Mother's Day. Man, I tell you.... I'm still thinking about that ravioli!! Everyone, including my 10-year-old nephew, loved their food. So good, so authentic. Can't wait to try them again!
Loved everything! The calamari was delicious. Some of the best I've had. Very tender, perfectly fried, and a large portion. All the entrees our group ordered and the tiramisu were really good too. The experience was made even better by excellent service. We will definitely be adding this to our regular rotation.
To start it on the hill. You want a place that true italian this place to go. And the covered outdoor seating is great on a rainy day and you want to enjoy the weather.
You find that the staff are friendly and nice.
And the food is fantastic specially the lasagna and there house salad.
But they have a challenge that you won't go away for long time. It there 3 LBS MEATBALL CHALLENGE. COME JOIN ME
10 stars for this wonderful establishment!!!!
My husband and I are visiting friends in IL and wanted to eat here. Therefore, our party of four was greeted promptly inside and outside as we were exiting the car.
The server provided very efficient and subtle service. For example, he didn’t ask us if we needed anything, he walked up to our table numerous times and silently looked to see if we needed anything, I.e. drink refills. Well done to our server. Kudos to you, sir.
The food was very scrumptious and more than enough to eat, especially the calamari ($12.99). My husband had to get a to-go box for it. I ordered the Manicotti ($14.99) and man, it was DELICIOUS!
If we come down to IL again, will definitely eat here again.
Great Italian food and atmosphere. Selections seem slightly pricy, but portions are large so come hungry. Service was fantastic. Leave time to walk it off around the neighborhood and visit the new park @ 2109 Marconi Ave - across from St. Ambrose church.
Italian food at this spot - very good. Super savory. The service here is better than most. It has a good feel to it.
A bit pricy but great food
We are from out of town and went here based on the reviews.... it did not disappoint. The lasagna and soup was amazing (bruschetta was weird) and the staff was friendly. We would definitely visit again if we were in town
Best manicotti I've ever had!! Toasted ravioli was awesome too!!
Phenomenal!! Lots of great options for gluten free. Get a pitcher of the red sangria, you won't be sorry. Lauren the manager was so kind, knowledgeable and professional. Ate outside in the sunshine and this is now THE PLACE we will start recommending as the best Italian in STL. We had a spiritual experience with the red sauce. ??
Great food. Great peach sangria. Great Merlot. Great service. I was there on the Saturday night when there was a line for tables. And I was all by myself. So I decided to order takeout. So I sat at the bar and drank water and Merlot and peach sangria while I waited on my food. And was impressed at the teamwork of the bartenders and servers. Took my food back to my hotel and it was excellent.
What a great restaurant. Best Italian food. Great atmosphere , great staff. Recommend to anyone who wants to eat food that can only be described as someone's great grandmas recipe.
Really great pizza. Surprisingly great. Chicken spedini was delicious as well. There's outside seating available but we got lucky and an indoor table became available.
Some of the best Italian food, no just food in general I have ever had I highly recommended
Dropped in without reservation, very busy. Staff made accommodations for us. Very safe, masks and attentive. Couldn’t ask for a better Italian experience on the hill. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Great for families, date night, lunch or just apps.
This was by far 1 of the Best Authentic Italian Restaurants I've ate at & fairly reasonably priced. Small town place, Big time Hospitality. Overall Great place to eat. I'm in St. Louis area for work & My boss was recommended this place.
The food is absolutely amazing and the service is great once to the table! The hostess was pretty rude this visit but that is not usually the case. I suggest making a reservation if you plan to go on the weekend. If you're not into pasta I HIGHLY recommend the Pollo Lorena, it's to die for!!
We truly enjoyed our dinner at Mama's on the Hill. I had the Lasagna, and my girlfriend had the beef ravioli. Both were excellent. The service was top notch. I would suggest going and let me know what you think.
Went here to eat with my family, and it was excellent. Food was excellent, and the service was nice and snappy. The whole aesthetic of this place makes you feel relaxed and comfortable, making this an ideal dining spot. I had the spaghetti, and it was probably the best spaghetti I've had. Definitely recommend this place!
The Hill - St. Louis's Little Italy. It's like going home to mama's to eat Italian. Restaurant situated in a house. Small restaurant for comfort Italian meal. Prices moderately priced. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Great wine selection.
Nice surprise to have several low carb options on the menu. Was very unexpected but so pleased to stay on my diet and have super tasty food also.
The staff was amazing and the food was even better. The tables were set up great for social distancing. I will definitely be going back.
Food and service are excellent every time we go. Definitely the best red sauce you will ever have in the states, and Mama's is certainly my favorite St. Louis restaurant.
Waiter was kind and attentive. As we were leaving (close to closing time) we saw them picking fresh spices from the small garden next to the restaurant. Doesn't get much fresher than that! Can't wait to go back again!
The flavor of the food was the best that I have had in a very long time. My taste buds we're excited from beginning to end. The service was great too.
Celebrated my moms bday & the staff made sure to accommodate us. They had everything else set up the way we asked. The food was outstanding. I had the seafood pasta & it was some best pasta & pasta sauce I've had. Came with plenty of shrimp & scallops. My brother got to veal saltamboca and let me try a bite & I'm glad he did. I will most likely get that dish when I go back. The staff was on top of everything & I waitress was quick & made no mistakes for our party of 10.
Food and service was fantastic! All waiters were wearing masks for protection. Tables were set up for social distancing. I had house salad and eggplant parmigiano. This is the first restaurant I have been in since March 2020. I will definitely go again!
This is my favorite restaurant on The Hill. I absolutely love their lasagna and their "The Hill" of spaghetti with two meatballs. The sauce is sweet and tasty, and the meat is quite flavorful. In all my trips here, the service has been efficient, and the meals have never been too salty.
Whenever I have a doctor's appointment at Washington University I always take a short drive to the Hill for lunch. I try to patronize an Italian restaurant that I have not been to before. This time was Mama's on the Hill. I made an excellent choice. Unbeknownst to me at the time was Mama who was the first employee to welcome and ask me what I would like. I asked her for her recommendations. She recommended the baked lasagna as a popular choice. By that time the waiter came to the table and agreed with Mama that lasagna what a great choice. It was an excellent choice! Good sized portion with cheesy sauce overflowing the lasagna almost to the edge of the plate. It's texture and taste were pretty solid and not a "runny" sauce. It tasted so great I would probably order the same thing the next time. The cost for plate was about $16. My salad had one of the best dressings on it which is Mama's own dressing. It was so good I bought a container to take home. Mama and the waiter were polite, helpful and did it with a smile. Both had a great personality to work with the public. I highly recommend Mama's on the Hill!
The food hare is fantastic! If you like lasagna, Mama's is a must try. The calamari is a lovely starter, light, crisp and not overly chewy. If you like veal, I've had every one of their veal dishes and they are all fantastic, but if you're hungry, I'd order the veal parmigiana. The portion size is very generous! Stacked 3 high, I always have leftovers.
We just ate here for lunch. We have done many Italian restaurants, including Boston and New York. The atmosphere was quaint and fun. The service decent. The food was excellent. We had toasted ravioli which is house made and the best I’ve had. Veal parmigiana and pasta con broccoli were amazing. This is a great place to visit for the food.
We showed up with a group of 15 unannounced around 3:15 on a Saturday. Our prior reservations at a different location were canceled because of building maintenance issue.
Mama's welcomed us in, graciously accommodated us and prepared amazing meals. The staff is amazing.
My new favorite restaurant on the Hill.
If I could give 6 stars, I would.
Wish I could beam myself there right now. All the ingredients of a wonderful Italian neighborhood restaurant. Friendly staff, delicious food and a great cozy atmosphere. So many places you love these days close down after a while. Hope this one can stay there forever for all to enjoy like I do. I live in Texas and have eaten here twice but it was so memorable, I long to get back.
House salad... AMAZING! Toasted Raviolis... DIVINE! Swanky music playing... DELIGHTFUL! Cardinals game on the TV... YES!!! Wait staff was polite, courteous, and attentive. However, lost one star because I saw everyone else receive bread, but also none was served to me.
They have a really relaxing environment here. The first thought when walking in was romance with the low lights and ??s. You get quite a bit for the ?. For $18 I got ? and butter, pasta with red or white sauce of your choice and my main dish which was next to perfect in all levels. I want to go back and yet their lasagna it look huge. Definitely recommend. Also a great spot for a date ?
Good Italian food at a decent price! Made reservations for 6:00 on Labor Day, the place was a madhouse, we were seated about 20 minutes after our reserved time. The 3 of us were sat in a small 4 person table in the corner with a 2 person table behind us, it was very cramped, we were thankful when the 2 top left so we had a bit more room. The wait staff are older men and the bus crew are younger ladies. The salad is very tasty, bread was dry but that's what butter and oil are for!, pasta con broccoli was the best I have ever had!!, my mother loved their lasagna, dessert was tasty. Will go back but will plan during a slower time due to seating.
Saturday lunch was excellent. Service was perfect. Second visit for my friend, first for me. We will definitely be back. Note though that the lunch menu prices are not available on weekends, but entree portions are large enough to share.
We had to wait for a table because it was Saturday dinner time and extremely busy - but it was worth every second and of the wait. All the food was delicious, the service was great and the portions were huge. Go hungry and you won’t regret it. Some Italians I find the pasta sauces are too busy and just a big mess of flavors, but with both my dish and my husbands you could taste the ingredients exactly as the menu described it. We picked Mama’s from the many in this area based on the other reviews and will definitely go back.
Came here with a large group and they put us in a room upstairs, off to the side. The acoustics were HORRIBLE, and it was so loud in there that you couldn't hear yourself think. That said, the specialty cocktails were awesome, and the food was good. I had the daily special which was a chicken and linguine dish, with less chicken in it than I was expecting, but the flavor was good. The salad was excellent and the service was outstanding. They just need to do SOMETHING about the sound in that room though!
Had a big party and we made reservations. The service was great our waiter Mickey was fantastic. The food was great everyone enjoyed. A little issue with no handicap ramp but we we're able to make it. That would be my on issue no handicap accessible entrance.
We had great service and an even better meal here for my fiance's birthday. We left with more than half of our dishes so the portions are massive and full of flavor. Some of the best lasagna I've ever had. Our table was cramped, however, while smaller parties sat at larger tables but that was my only gripe. The rest of the experience made up for it. Can't wait to return!
Great food in an intimate atmosphere. Very accommodating for our vegetarian group. They even made a meatless antipasto tray for us. Good customer service and no rushing. Really happy with our visit. Will be back.
To start off, the atmosphere was inviting and family friendly. The staff there were very nice and forgiving for any errors during my dining experience. The food, oh boy the food. My soup was full of color and flavor. Their famous dish “the toasted ravioli” is amazing, I definitely recommend it. My chicken parmigiana was delicious and the portion sizes were great. The desert was a great way to end my dining experience at this establishment. Now I don’t reside in St. Louis and also don’t come here often, but when I do, I choose to stop at Mama’s on the hill.
Staff was friendly and inviting. Didn't have to wait long the food. The food was satisfying but the toasted ravioli was awesome( wish the portion was more). Overall, a pleasant experience. Definitely would visit again
Mamas is just one of those places! Great food (must try the toasted ravioli) and its always fresh!
Great family vibe. We dined here with a baby and they were super accommodating. Loved the toasted ravioli, the lasagna, and such a FRESH yummy salad (not just iceberg like so many other Italian spots). Folks from our group some cocktails too and they were on point.
What a phenomenal restaurant. The food was exceptional. We had 6 different dishes and they all exceeded expectations. The toasted Ravioli was the best I've had. If you are visiting St Louis, make this a destination on your trip.
Had a nice lunch at Mama's on the hill the other day, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is a really charming little place with about 20 tables and a small bar right in the middle of the Hill. Ordered the baked ravioli with a house salad, the salad was fantastic, with homemade dressing and provel cheese on top, the ravioli was also good, nice sauce and perfectly cooked. Service was friendly, I would certainly come back.
Cute little local place on the Hill. Recommended to is by our Air BnB host and we were not disappointed. I thought about doing the spaghetti challenge but decided on the manicotti instead (my wife got.the regular spaghetti). Food was delicious. Service was phenomenal. Definitely would visit again.
Such a cute place! Granted it wasn't crazy busy because it was raining out pretty good, but I was over half full and my service was great. I had the fried ravioli appetizer and spaghetti and meatballs. Neither are item are unique, but they were both wonderful. The meatballs were some of the best I've ever had. Definitely ate too much.
We could smell something heavenly as we walked up the street. The aroma inside was even more incredible. We were seated in what feels like your family dining room and had the most wonderful staff helping us. I love food and I'm terribly picky, so I don't say this lightly: this is the best food I've ever eaten. If you come to St. Louis and don't eat here, you're doing yourself a terrible disservice. Even the house salad dressing is to die for. I'd eat salad on purpose here. The canneloni made my toes curl. Phenomenal. Simply phenomenal.
Mama's on the Hill is a great spot for some affordable Italian. While I've only been there for lunch and tried it because another spot we planned to go to was closed for a holiday, it was a great pick. Our server was very friendly and happy to answer any questions that we had and the service was prompt. The antipasto appetizer and other entrees were all tasty.
Hands down best Italian food I have had in a long time. Staff is very knowledgeable and ultra friendly. Everything was top notch. Only in town for a few more nights and we are looking to go back before we head home. Can't say enough good things about this place...
We got in right away at 3pm and no one was in the dining room. Ordered the toasted ravioli for an appetizer. Good but could have been hotter considering no one else was there. Ordered spaghetti with one meatball (sauce on the side) for the toddler. One is plenty! That is a serious sized meatball. I ordered the baked lasagna and my spouse ordered the cannelloni. They did bring out bread and had oil and parmesan cheese on the table. Nothing exotic about the bread. I probably expected more from an Italian restaurant in The Hill. The meals came out pretty quick. The lasagna is very filling and very good. The cannelloni is equally good. Tony came out with a tray of bite-sized cookies incentivizing us to have one, but didn't tell us they were $1.50 each. Turn down the cookies! The toddler got spumoni with her meal and was more than pleased with it. Overall a good experience, although our waitress was a little too eager to take our order and even more too eager to pick up the signed receipt, which I've always felt was rude to do while the guest is still seated at the table.
I had the Rabbit Bolognese today and it was just outstanding. My wid
Fe had the spaghetti and it was good too Altogether a very nice meal.
So good. A friend recommended this place. It's rather small but cozy. Menu seems to be the usual Italian fair with a few specials. Everything we had was excellent including dessert. Would definitely recommend.
This was a great place that my wife and I ate at for lunch on the first day of our 2015 road trip. Toasted Ravioli was outstanding. Delicious calimari. Crab-Stuffed mushrooms were great. The Seafood St. Louis Style Pizza however, was not the best. Don't think we were fans of St. Louis Style Pizza.
Truly a great Place to eat. The atmosphere was great, the service was amazing, and the food is just like grandma used to make it. Would highly recommend going here having a great time and spending less than you would at a fake Italian restaurant. Thanks for keeping the food so great!!!
I'd argue that this is the best restaurant on the hill. That's a hard sell because Italian is what the hill does, but try it for yourself and find out. The service is excellent, portion size is amazing and the price is very reasonable. I've never been dissatisfied with any aspect of this restaurant and my girlfriend and I continue to come here for special occasions.
Food was fine and restaurant had a smaller, more intimate feel than some I've been to. When I asked for dessert, our server told me to get one of the banana-chocolate cupcakes being offered. Since I don't like banana flavored things, I declined, and asked for a dessert menu. He told me nothing else was homemade that night and that I shouldn't bother. Okay, fine ... we walked to a gelato shop instead.
Couldn't leave Saint Louis without having tried Italian food at The Hill. Stopped by midday on a busy Mother's Day Sunday. Service was not compromised in spite of the crowds. The lasagna was good, and the toasted raviolis were okay, but may not have lived up to all the hype.
Mama's is a revival of a historical restaurant that has been on "the Hill" for decades. Under new management since the last of "Mama's" family retired and is operated by a owner who grew up in the neighborhood. Good selection of traditional Italian dishes with a few of the house special creations. Small intimate setting for couples but provides spaces for family gatherings. As a bonus sidewalk seating for outdoor dining along with a good selection of wines to compliment the food choices makes this restaurant a great place for a pleasant evening and well as a noon lunch.
Italian food, yeah, very satisfying. The service here is attentive. Prices are decent. Kinda of like a restaurant in Los Angeles I loved to visit.
FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED!!!!! Andrea & her staff are friendly & professional. Great food & great atmosphere.
As residence on the hill we get the opportunity to eat at a lot of Italian restaurants. This is our favorite and go-to spot in the neighborhood for Italian. We love their house salad. They have a barramundi entree with a cream sauce that I love. Perfect when I went Italian but want to watch my carbs! The pasta con broccoli is hands-down my favorite pasta. So much so that whenever we have a big group at our house we order a pan of pasta con broccoli and a big pan of salad to go. Sometimes service can be slow. Some of the wait staff is excellent some not so much. But it is worth the wait and the prices can't be beat for what you're getting. Authentic Italian at it's best!
Went for lunch with a party of 10. We had to change our reservation last minute. They were very accommodating. Food was spectacular as always. Service was a bit slow. Management should hire more wait staff, waitress busy covering several tables. Food was awesome with a great atmosphere. I recommend the Pino Noir and Pollo Gabriella.
The best veal parm I've had since leaving South Philly. I would recommend reservations. The salad with dinner was fantastic and the lemon tart was mouthwatering. Service outstanding.
Staying downtown or I guess anywhere in St. Louis deserves a trip to the hill. Old school utilize neighborhood banners screaming the next local vfw bbq americana at its finest. Mamas is no different. Down to earth and warm. The restaurant focus on what's important the food. Anyone else hate when chefs play architect?
We had and loved:
Spaghetti
Meatballs
Toasted raviolis- a must
Truffle
Taramisi
Generous pours of chanti
Pollo modiga - awesome!
You need to eat here! The food is great, service is fantastic, and the interior is elegant. Our server Tommy was a delight. Even if you have to wait, it's worth it. Make a reservation and try it yourself!
My hubby and I had a wonderful dinner on the patio! Service was great - food was great! Toasted ravioli was delish and cannelloni was perfect! Hubby had penne arraeiata was good but spicy! He liked it. Italian almond cookies (we thought were free) were to die for and we didn't mind paying for them - they were that good! Great music playing outside! We will be back!
This was our first time ever going to Mama's. And let me say it was AMAZING if your reading this. Then you need to STOP reading this and just come to Mama's On the Hill. We arrived at 9 an hour before they closed. We were greeted and seated very well. The food was amazing! My husband and I tried the toasted ravioli. And it was awesome. He had the rabbit and I had the seafood linguini with the salad. The salad was good, but I truly love olive oil/vinaigrette which was on top. We did not try the wine. But we have plenty of time for that. Thank you for having us Mama's we will be back.
3 couples for restaurant week on the Hill. The hostess was darling, and so sweet.
Zach was our server. He was fabulous! Filet was great. Great value. Cocktails were a bit overpriced. $8 each for the 1st, $9 for the 2nd.
We were seated downstairs, Very large room. No ambience except for a large fireplace. Very noisy. Will will return, but will sit upstairs.
I'm so glad we chose this restaurant during our trip to St Louis! The Hill is a quaint neighborhood with several family owned restaurants and this one didn't disappoint! The service and food was great!
Amazing legit authentic Italian food!!! Staff was great. We had a large group who all ordered different dishes along with a bunch of appetizers, and EVERYTHING was wonderful. We also ordered a few bottles of wine and the price wasn't over the top. We'll definitely return when we're back in town!
As I look at the pictures I almost start to salivate again. The food was spectacular, the ambiance was super quaint, and the service was good. The seafood pasta had plenty of seafood and the lasagna was everything I'd want in a traditional lasagna. Will definitely be coming back. The only negative was at the very end of our meal the server offered us a cookie and we noticed we were charged like 7 bucks for it. I would have rather been offered a dessert menu so I could make that decision myself. The experience wanted to be a home run but it fell short. On a positive note I would highly recommend Mamas on the Hill.
Go to Mamas on the Hill for nice family dinner or romantic date. Cozy little restaurant in The Hill neighborhood. Went on a Friday night around 8pm and had a 35 minute wait. There is seating outside which made it nice to enjoy the neighborhood while we were waiting. The staff are super friendly and the menu is extensive. This is authentic Italian food...VERY GOOD. Mama's salad was one of the best salads I've had in long time. I ordered the Baked Lasagna, the portion was very large and the quality was amazing. The wine selection is great too. I would definitely recommend Mama's on the Hill
Excellent food. The Modaigo was amazing. Staff was friendly. Kids loves the exceptionally tasty meatballs with spaghetti. The atmosphere was good. Really enjoyed our visit.
A very nice restaurant. They've updated the look and it was nice inside. I didn't realize they took reservations and that would be a suggestion I would make to anyone. Their popularity cause them to be pretty crowded the night we were there and definitely reservations are a must especially during the peak times. But good service and a good time overall
Yum-o. The Tiramisu was made by the waiter. It was so good. The eggplant parm was spot on. They server bread made from the local bakery. There is oil on the table. Wish they would of had balsamic vinegar but we made it work. Everything was authentic. The white peach sangria is amazing. It was perfect. Plenty of street parking but they get busy. Best to make a reservation. We showed up on a Saturday though and they made it work for a table of 11. Very sweet of them.
This is my FAVORITE restaurant in St. Louis. The penne ala vodka changed my life. The food is so good, the staff is nice, everything about it is great. 1000/10 would recommend!
Amazing experience here! Italian food was out of this world. The employees was awesome. And when Ace our server said everything was good, he meant it! We had the toasted ravioli, lasagna, and tortellini. Definitely worth $50 and we each got two meals of out it.
The atmosphere is great being on the all Italian “hill”. As you drive up you’ll find multiple houses turned small family restaurants. This one is no different. I had the lasagna and it was wonderful. I could eat this food all day long.
Visiting St Louis for a few days and The Hill area was recommended for Italian. We selected Mama's and we were not disappointed. An old house converted to a restaurant several years ago was very cozy and homey, nice atmosphere and all employees were very friendly and shared a little history. The toasted ravioli appetizer was very good, I thought the chicken parm dinner was excellent and husband gave a big thumbs up on the lasagna. House salad was good, the sliced bread was average.
Overall experience was superb.
Great service, fantastic food! The dedicated and friendly staff do a great job attending, and the atmosphere is very comfotable. Great selection of wines to pair with food, and a fully stocked bar. Try it if you're in the area!
It is delicious, every item, I have been coming here for several years and it's still my favorite restaurant on The Hill, I recommend this restaurant to anyone.
We headed to the hill to check out some good Italian food and we hit the jackpot with mamas!!
Parking was a bit tough to find - the entire area is packed with cars on both sides since it's also a residential area. We did luck out with finding an on street parking spot.
It was Friday night - so we had to wait about 20 minutes. They asked if we would be ok seated in the banquet room downstairs and we had no problem with it. The service was great.
Started with the toasted ravioli which was fantastic! Could have had another plate for dessert! I had the seafood ravioli which was very good - rich sauce - plenty of seafood. Paired with suggested red wine on menu. My husband had a side salad which was large and very fresh tasting with a great dressing. Son has the spaghetti and meatballs which he really enjoyed. We had desserts - spumoni, choc cake and lemon cello cake - all were very good.
Bill came to $98 - before gratuity - which we felt was a decent price based on all the food and the quality of food we received. My husband did mention the tax seemed high - maybe 10% - but that can't be helped.
So in conclusion - we highly recommend mamas for an outstanding meal.
Friendly service, amazing food. Definitely a favorite spot for a casual Italian dining experience! Their Toasted Ravoli is the best you'll ever find!
First time-went for our anniversary. Great location and atmosphere. Waiter was super nice. Prompt service. Great marsala and chicken spedini!! Toasted ravs were ok. Would definitely go again!
We don't go to St.Louis very often but me and my wife love Mama's on the Hill. it is absolutely son of the best Italian food that you can get. We've only been here twice but both five star experiences. next time we're in St Louis we will definitely be coming back.
Excellent veggie pasta - I got the roasted red pepper ravioli, extra spicy, which they did to perfection. Our table got the cheese ravioli (which was excellent, if a little commercial). The wine list is a little different, and the valpollicella is quite good, but a good selection all in all. Definitely must try!
I usually dont write reviews, but this place was amazing from the time my friend and I sat down till the time we left. The food was delicious we ordered the sampler appetizer, lasagna, and Seafood linguini. The portions was more then enough for us to share everything!! Oh and I almost forgot they have some deserts that are made fresh daily which also was delicious!! We try a new restaurant once a month and they had the best customer service by far..... P.S. Dont eat too much bread with olive oil before your food comes, that was so good too!
Wait time was pretty high so I suggest to anyone going to get a reservation. That being said the food was amazing my wife got the baked lasagna and I got the sea food linguine and both blew my mind. Oh and fried ravioli is a must here soooooo good!
Was very pleasantly surprised by the overall excellence of every single course. From the fresh and tasty salad, to the authentically originated ravioli, to the amazing taste in the sauces, I highly recommend this restaurant.
This is by far my family's favorite restaurant on the hill! The bread that is served is so is DELICIOUS! Warm and soft in the middle with crust around the edge! The toasted ravioli is good but not the best we have tried. My husband gets the seafood pasta every time and loves it. I share the chicken Alfredo with one of my daughters. We both agree it's the BEST chicken Alfredo we have ever had! My other two daughters love the spaghetti with meatballs. The serving sizes are plentiful! We always share dishes. The restaurant itself is small and cozy. Once we went for my daughters graduation and they were able to sit 13 of us comfortably but if you are in the regular part of the restaurant, it can be a little snug. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves authentic Italian food!
We ordered delivery and even though the snowstorm was keeping some people off the roads, these guys were still open at 7pm on the Sunday we ordered. Ordered through Grubhub so you never know if your modifications will be seen but they did everything, including adding chicken to our salad and adding the upcharge it was even though that was a written in memo, not a selected choice. Food was hot, fresh, quick and delicious. Didn't like the garlic cheese bread because I couldn't taste any garlic and it had fontina or maybe provolone on top and was SUPER bland. But everything else was really good. Couldn't get a pic of the fried ravioli before we finished it
Probably the most authentic Italian restaurant I've been too. I loved it! The food was amazing, i wish i would of taken a picture so i can upload it on here. Pairing it with the wine was probably the best part. I tried the famous STL toasted ravioli, sooo good. I see what the hype is about now! The bread was warm and soft and with the olive oil...ugh delicious!!
I went on a Saturday night and i gotta say it was PACKED; i probably waited about 40 mins.(definitely worth it) i will go back when I'm in STL again.
10/10 would recommend !
We are from out of state and staying in St Louis for a week. I was told about The Hill and that there are fabulous restaurants there. I looked at the menu for Mama’s On The Hill and we decided to have dinner here. I am so glad we did! I haven’t had an Italian dinner like that since my Nana. We started off with their fried ravioli which they are well known for. They were wonderful! As was the mozzarella sticks. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs for dinner and had to get a to go box. The service was wonderful. They were all super nice. I will definitely eat here again if we come back. For those of you who may like a food challenge they offer one!!
My wife and I visit here frequently when we travel to St. Louis for a getaway. A few months ago I also took some of my coworkers to the restaurant. The food is amazing, the service is always impeccable and the atmosphere is great! We will be back! Our first visit was in December 2010.
This is a great restaurant. We came by today Jan 2 and waited for opening at 11am. At 1115 the door was still locked. 10-12 people tried to get in during this 15 mins and most walked over to Eovaldi's or went to Zia's where we ended up. I tried calling your phone to see if it was open and it went to a weird voicemail. Your lights were on? Maybe closed for the holiday week?
Stopped by Mama's to celebrate my niece's 10th birthday. We had a reservation due to it being a Saturday night however we were pleasantly surprised that there was hardly anyone in the establishment.
We were seated immediately, ordered drinks and were offered warm bread to tie us over until our main meal. Can't say no to bread!! I got a salad with their pizza which was delicious and had plenty for leftovers. My companions got the salmon and the chicken fettuccine. We all left full and with more to eat the next day.
The wait staff seemed to want to rush everyone even though the place wasn't full. That's my only complaint about our visit.
Parking is side street only so be prepared to walk if there's nothing around front. There are a lot of restaurants in this area called the Hill so it does get busy.
Had a yummy dinner at Mama's on the Hill. We had a group of 8 and were seated quite quickly after we arrived. It was a busy night at Mama's but the food came shortly after we ordered. For appetizers, we shared the toasted ravioli, calamari, and bruschetta. Their raviolis and calamari comes with a tasty tomato sauce. Calamari was a large portion and fried to a nice crisp. For my main, I tried the rigatoni carbonara. The sauce is rich and creamy with the right amount of saltiness. I looked the pancetta and mushrooms. Couldn't finish the dish so I had yummy leftovers for the next day!
Kudos to Mama's On the Hill being one of the few local restaurants to open on New Years Day attracting tourists like me. Because of that, my friend and I got to try the famous toasted ravioli. Every pop in the mouth tasted very rich. These mini delicacies made me think of an Italian version of fried Asian vegetable spring rolls except stuffed with meat. I tried pairing it with one of the red wines they recommended but it wasn't to my liking. Their homemade marinara sauce had the right amount of parsley and chunks of tomato which I loved. We also got,
Mama's house salad: so glad they were generous with the dressing, deliciously soaked
Stuffed mushrooms: soft and cooked just right
What really impressed me were the ambience and fast service. Just imagine a loud Italian family style kitchen while Por Ti Volare is playing in the background. Even though it was busy and loud, the food came quick. Also I love the interior design in the restroom (see picture). No joke, they have a full couch in there. They also have a cute baby changing station for those who have infants !
The location of this restaurant makes it that much more authentic. I haven't been to Italy to know but I'm sure they must have standards being located on the Hill due to its history. Thanks for a good experience!
Delicious. The antipasto was fantastic, as were the toasted ravioli. The penne a la vodka was one of the best I've had. Somehow the desserts managed to be equally great. Service was prompt and excellent, and the waitstaff were beyond accommodating. Will definitely return.
I love this place! The cozy ambience make you feel like you're at an Italian home!!! The tables feel close and cozy in the best way. It was our first time here and we went with the server's suggestion on food and we are glad we did! Worth every penny. Very impressed. I'm going to tell all my friends! Flavor and portions all amazing!!!
This place is amazing. Great food and even better service. I came in in the middle of a Sunday afternoon and got a table right away.
Get the toasted ravioli. You need it to be a part of your life. The cannoli was also amazing. I can't recommend this place enough.
If you are looking to take someone special out to eat, make this your spot. You won't regret it.
The staff was great. They had a true team attitude. Food was unbelievably good. Classic dishes felt homemade. Bathrooms left something to be desired. Beyond that, it was overall a great experience.
I definitely recommend making reservations if you're going on a weekend, but this place is great! Although we had a bit of a wait to get a table, our service was excellent and our food came quickly. The food was delicious and the toasted ravioli was exceptional. One of my new favorites on the hill.
Went on a Friday evening and was seated right away. Staff was friendly. Service was great. Bread was plain but is still good when buttered and they have dipping oil on table. Also got the garlic cheese bread that was really good. House salad and the entrees were amazing!!! (Pollo Spedini and pollo gabriella). Only down side was that one entree was supposed to come with a side and the server did not ask if we wanted it so we never got it which was ok because the size of the salads and entrees were large and filling. We were told that one of the servers comes in at 5:30 every morning to make homemade truffles and he sells them for $1.50 each, even though we thought that was a little pricey we tried the almond and mango coconut (which tasted more like coconut) but OMG the almond one was soooo good. Overall great service with great food!!
Some of the best Italian food I have ever had! I went here with my mom when she visited and we were not disappointed! We were told that it was known for toasted ravioli, so we had to try it, and it was sooo good! My pasta dish was super flavorful as well as the dessert! I recommend making a reservation if you plan on going, because they get busy, but it's worth the wait!
This is by far my favorite place on The Hill and Italian in STL! Generally, you can get in without a wait or very short one if there are only a couple people but I would highly recommend reservations for more than that, especially on the weekends.
I have been going here for years and cannot think of one thing I have had that I didn't like.
First, you have to get the STL favorite Toasted Raviolis because they were invented here and the sauce is so good! We also enjoy the calamari.
The dinner salad is also my favorite. It comes with a sweet vinegarette that I love. Even some of my friends that normally do not like stuff like that loved it.
When you get the bread, pour yourself some of the olive oil on your table on your bread plate, get rid of the butter, and dip. You'll thank me later.
My favorite is the penne carbonara and manicotti. I've also had a couple of chicken dishes that are very good.
I will be back!
If you haven’t yet tried Mama’s, you should! Authentic Italian cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. The service is impressive, and the food is amazing. Have you ever caught yourself closing your eyes when you eat something REALLY good? It’s THAT good!
Short version: everything is phenomenal. Long version: The atmosphere walking in is warm, cozy, and classy. It's the kind of place where you could wear a t-shirt or a cocktail dress and not feel out of place in either. The staff is amazing, with a whole team of people coordinating to provide top notch service, from delivering water to clearing your dessert plates. The server I had was extremely knowledgable and had the comfortable demeanor of an uncle: laid back, sense of humor, and direct. The food and wine were incredible, and the sauce on the seafood linguine was creamy and mouthwatering. My friend remarked that, as well-presented and fancy as it was, it gave the impression of comfort food. The coffee was perfect, too. Everything was brought and cleared promptly, and at the end our food was quickly removed from the table, boxed and bagged, and returned. It was my first experience here and certainly won't be my last. I would go so far as to say this is the best Italian restaurant I've been to in the entire Midwest, and certainly comparable to meals I've had throughout Italy.
We started with the toasted ravioli, it was delicious, especially the marinara dipping sauce. I had the Papa's Own pizza, and added black olives. My friend had fettuccine alfredo. Both dishes get a 2 thumbs up from us!
My favorite place on The Hill the calamari is delicious as is the homemade proved cheese sticks! The pasta's are so great
Went on a Sunday afternoon. Sam was our server and he was fantastic. The toasted ravioli was one of the best I've ever had. Went perfectly with the Chianti that was suggested. We split the lasagna and still took Home over half of each plate. So much cheesy goodness. The caprese salad was wonderful. The staff ever stopped hustling ever. They had a table cleared for the next patron before the previous one made it to their car. A must if you want good Italian food! And Sam!!
What an amazing place! Delayed by a flight back to Cleveland we found this restaurant on Google and are so glad we did! Jane offered us a welcoming service and was SO accommodating to our daughter who was “practically starving”... highly recommend this dining experience!!! Fantastic food and doting staff!
Love Mamas. Came here for the first time almost 5 years ago and It's been my go to Restaurant on the Hill ever since! I'm obsessed with Italian food so I come to The Hill often and my Bf surprised me with a date here tonight, I got my favorite the Seafood Linguine it was amazing as always! The Seafood Ravioli is another good one too not as much pasta as the linguine but same flavors both amazing! I also got the side Mamas Salad and I love their house dressing. I'm not even a huge fan of balsamic but it's very flavorful and not overwhelming like most balsamic dressings. I also had the White Peach Sangria and it was very good and made to order! I would recommend making reservations! We got there about 7:45 thinking we'd miss the dinner rush and waited about an hour! Got a drink and waited outside, it was a pretty night & It's worth the wait! All of the staff was super attentive and friendly! Once we sat down everything came very quick. Bread, drinks and our food!! Definitely worth the trip!
We went again and once more, it was great! My wife took some chicken Laura home and I ate it a couple of days later. STILL GOOD!
great Italian restaurant in St Louis, amazing pasta and pizza! Staff was nice! Food is really good! I would surely come back! recommended!
I am absolutely in-love with this restaurant. Anytime, I am in St. Louis I go to Mama's on the Hill. I was in there a couple of months ago with a friend of mine when we decided to head to St. Louis for a Car show and we stopped on the Hill for this restaurant and he loved every bit of it. I have even suggested it to my own general manager at my job and he traveled there and loved it too. This place has the best authentic Italian food, and lives up to its reputation with the Toasted Ravioli. Next time I am in St. Louis I am bringing my appetite and trying the big meatball!
Fantastic service on a busy night with the bike races. Food was very good but the service was top shelf!
OMG! This place is amazing. I am not even sure where to begin. I guess I will stat with we didn't have a reservation. So we showed up on a Friday night and were seated right away. This is not something I would expect in this establishment by any means but it was a holiday weekend which I think helped our cause.
I should preface this review by saying that we went to the Italian part of St. Louis because not only is my husband part Italian but pasta is his absolute favorite food. And these guys did not disappoint.
On the menu, they have a "Challenge." You have to finish the challenge in an hour and there are certain times you can get it or you have to order it in advance. If you do finish in the specified time, they will pay for your food. (We did not order it in advance and were dining at a time where it should have been ordered previously.) We asked if we could get it anyway. Our server said he wasn't sure, he would ask, we had probably a 60/40 chance since it wasn't that busy. Yay! They said yes.
My husband got the challenge and I got the Pollo Saltimboca with a mama's house salad and the side of pasta with White sauce. For my food, it was some of the best Italian I have ever had. The thing I loved the most about it was how reminiscent it was of Italy for me. The pasta wasn't the "main" part of the dish, but the side dish. But it was amazing. I immediately wanted to spend a year in the kitchen learning the secrets. For my husbands "dish." Holy Moly! It was gigantic. (I eventually learned just how much food it was but don't want to spoil it.) When they delivered the food, it was a huge bowl of spaghetti and the biggest meat ball I have ever seen. After my husband decided he was finished, and we did pay for the challenge, I tried the meatball and can't wait to learn how to make them. It was tender, juicy, and melted in my mouth.
Not only was the food fantastic, the service was great as was the atmosphere. It was a cute, quaint italian place that had 5 star service and phenomenal food. I would highly recommend visiting this plae but remember to make a reservation.
I'm gonna day the best lasagna in the whole wide world! Do yourself a favor and get it! You won't be disappointed. The area surrounding Mama's is a delight to explore. You do feel like you've stepped back in time with little shops and stores. We will be back!
Definitely in the running for the best Steak I ever had. It's between here and Hamilton's Steak House. It was only a special tho so I don't know if they have the filet minion all the time but they should it was SERIOUSLY DELICIOUS. I ordered the Tortellini Ala Pappa. Which I only took one bite of.... it delicious and I'm taking it home..... but my boyfriend ordered the steak special. It was so delicious I made him share ! Lol. The stuffed mushrooms here are always my favorite! Oh if you're not a wine drinker the MARGS are strong! Their service could be a little better. Not terrible but not the best. They are always very pleasant
So our friends took us to the hill for some Italian food. This is our first time in St Louis and there is a big hype about the toasted ravioli.. we don't have that in Texas .. we went to Mama's On the Hill and we found that they were the original inventors of the toasted ravioli ! We had two orders and wow they were dam good ! Great place and very friendly staff !
This place was super delicious and a great environment. My husband I and ordered the sampler appetizer with toasted ravioli, fried calamari and stuffed mushrooms. We
Also ordered some garlic cheese bread. We had salads with both our entrees. I can't remember the dish I ordered but I traded my shrimp for chicken and it had an olive oil, butter and garlic sauce. Very tasty. My husband ordered the lasagna and he enjoyed it. I like that this place had a variety of options with red, white and olive oil and garlic sauce choices. Also service was great! We came here for our anniversary and we will be back again.
This is a must do when visiting St. Louis. I had the fettuccine alfredo and it put every other fettuccine alfredo I have had to shame. Kudos to the chef who made it, you've ruined all my restaurants back home for me. They will never compare.

This was my first time here and I look back to coming back and trying more items. I was on a strict diet and the chef was able to accommodate my needs with a home run. I was drooling over the other items I saw on various tables... I had sausage and peppers along with meatballs and salad. It was AMAZING!!!! Nothing short of a great meal. I had a taste of the toasted Ravioli... Awesome!!!
Kudos to the chef and and great server. I wish I had her name, but I look forward to sitting in her section again... Oz was great at helping our table as well.
This place is a must try!!!
This place was a complete surprise... some of the restaurants on "the hill" are closed for dinner on Sunday.. so we stopped into Mama's we made a great choice... limited beer menu no draught but I made it work... friendly staff and really good food.. I had the Rabbit pasta and my wife had a Shrimp dish.. both were delicious.. prices aren't over board so win win..
"Wow!" I said as I took the first bite of my lasagna. I love authentic Italian food and Mama's nailed it! My date and I both were so pleased with our meal and service. We discussed after we left about our awesome experience there. The food came out in a reasonable time and overall it was one of the best dining experiences I've had. They take great pride and care in making amazing food and it shows!
Let me start by informing you that I never review anything, good or bad. In fact I created a yelp account just to write this review.
I love chicken fettuccini and I like to use that as a basis when I visit a new to me Italian restaurant to see how good the food is. So far Olive Garden was the best tasting to me, and Ive visited some classy Italian restaurants.
Last night I visited this place and was absolutely amazed how good Mamas made this dish! Soo much so, Im back today.
I recommend this restaurant to anyone who has a craving for Italian food. You must visit them!!! The staff are every bot as pleasant as the food!
My son and daughter in law had their small wedding reception there yesterday! The staff was wonderful and the food was terrific! Thank you for a wonderful memory for their reception!
Went here on a St. Louis friend's recommendation, and got off to a bit of a rocky start once we were seated and pretty much ignored for about 15 minutes. Fortunately, things rebounded and service was attentive through the rest of our meal.
Sounds like most of the Hill is occupied with old-school Italian restaurants, and Mama's is right in that vein. Semi-romantic atmosphere, but also appropriate for family dining. I believe there was even some Frank playing when we walked in. I didn't appreciate having to listen to loud political commentary from the group at the next table over, but that wasn't the restaurant's fault.
My kiddo and I split an order of meat-filled toasted ravioli -- a St. Louis classic -- with traditional hearty red sauce and some Italian bread. I really liked my house salad, a nice mix of greens with tangy/sweet balsamic dressing. The same red sauce topped my spaghetti, and although the kiddo isn't a sauce fan, I loved it and we both dug the meatballs. With a glass of wine for me, our bill seemed a bit pricy. But hey, when in St. Louis on the Hill.... you've got to mangia, mangia! Mama's seems a good place to do it.
Great family restaurant. Small, so make a reservation if you don't want to wait. I went on a Saturday night with no reservations and took 20 to 30 minutes to seat 2 people. Well worth it though. For the 2 of us it cost just under $50, with 1 appetizer and 1 glass of wine.
Excellent food, great service, and a charming atmosphere. Love it!
Mama's is one of the few restaurants open on Sunday on the hill. We were smart enough to stop before a Cardinal game. We sat at the bar while we waited for our table and visited with the owner's daughter. Very bright, personable and made a wonderful peach sangria. My husband and shared a fried ravioli and the fettuccine alfredo. Both were wonderful.
Why does this place only have 3 1/2 stars? Im sorry, but this was probably one of the best meals i have ever had. Hands down probably the best italian i've had so far in my life (but no i have not been to italy or little italy in New York since I was very young). Had a little bit of multiple things. Toasted Ravioli? So good. Bread they served? Nice and warm... please add the oil from the table (it actually has garlic so you are sort of eating garlic bread) white wine and the pollo spineldi?!?! Deliciousssss! I fell in love with the linguini and the chicken. They gave us dinner portions so it was a lot of food, but i only had some left overs. Topped it off with tiramisu for desert which was shared with two other people (someone could probably eat one alone, but we all wanted a taste). The tiramisu was so light and fluffy. Also recommended!
We were seated within thirty minutes and there were people waiting when we got there. Also people were told to wait for 45 minutes and decided to wait. Service is pretty quick once you are seated.
Mama's is the place to be! Don't be discouraged by the wait. The food is amazing! Please visit mama's!
Really awesome, friendly service. Definitely felt like family. The fried raviolis where to DIE for! The manicotti I had came out quick and hot. Just an amazing overall experience and will have to make sure I make a stop everytime I pass through! Love the Hill, just havent been here, but now, I have, and I will be coming back
A 3.5 star average is blasphemous! I've been to Italy and this is top tier compared to that! We had the fried ravioli, baked lasagna (with the best Italian sausage I've ever had), and tortellini ala pappa (peas and prosciutto). The ravioli was good but in my opinion it's not that big of deal even though it is St Louis' "thing." The lasagna was LITERALLY the best lasagna I've ever tasted. The tortellini was perfect. Our waitress was nice and gave hefty pours of wine. We got sangria which was interesting in how wine-y it was and not that sweet but definitely good. We also had a Chianti that was very good. I want to go here every week!!!
This place was amazing! The atmosphere was great. The staff was very polite. The food was outstanding! If you cant decide what to get...try the Seafood Linguine. By far one of the best dishes I have ever had!!! Definitely a must go if you are visiting St Louis!!!
The staff was great!! The food was ?
We ordered “The Hill” pizza; it was delicious. Friendly staff too. Would go back here again for sure
This is hands down my FAVORITE restaurant on The Hill! Not only does Mamas offer an exceptional variety of authentic Italian dishes, but the staff goes above and beyond. They make you feel like family, and what is more Italian than that?!
Home of the famous Toasted Ravioli and definitely a must try!
Also, the Chicken Marsala (pictured) is the best I've ever had. Pictures don't do the flavor justice. YUM!
SALUTI!
Food was great. I went with a group that had been prearranged. Service was fairly slow but we were enjoying ourselves and didn’t mind. Server recommended we put all orders on one ticket for efficiency and divide it at end. We took the recommendation and it didn’t go well. I waited an 90 mins total for my ticket while a group member beside me waited a few minutes. After making two appeals for the Check I left cash on the table and departed out of necessity with my ride. Members of my party waited another 45 minutes after an appeal to the manager. So, that didn’t go well.
Food was good and the environment was enjoyable. Perhaps insist on divided checks in the future?
Excelente Comida :)
Great food, wonderful staff and lovely atmosphere!
It was very good and the salad was amazing.
Wonderful! Was told this was a favorite from quite a few local friends.
Located on the historical "The Hill" is St. Louis' version of Little Italy.
We were not disappointed. We didn't make reservations, mostly because on the Yelp app they didn't have an Open Table option and most places dont take rezzies for 2 people. Regardless, we walked in kind of early, 6ish, and were asked promptly if we had reservations. We were seated right away.
It seems like a team effort here. We had one server get us a wine list, one server bring us water, one server take our drink and app order etc. When we go out, we like to take our time, get some drinks and hang out before we go for the entree. Our main server (large very nice man) was very into the hustle. Me, being indoctrinated in this industry, looked around and realized that he had a small section with a large reservation taking up the majority of his tables. I was disappointed that we wouldn't get to take our time, but I get it.
We ordered a few glasses of wine, including both sangria specials. All were great. We started with the calamari (lightly breaded with great texture, but tasted like the fryer from which they came) and caprese salad to share. One of the more exceptional caprese salads I've had. I think it comes dressed with their signature vinaigrette. We then ordered a veal dish (don't judge) and that had a great, very rich mushroom cream sauce.
All in all great experience and I came away knowing that gluten is not my friend.
Always great food and excellent service! We love going to Mamas!
This is a traditional Italian restaurant. The vibe is great, the food is good but of norm, the service is wonderful
The food was amazing! The service.. not so much. Our server said they were slammed but there's definitely a difference between the kitchen being behind due to volume & the kitchen being behind because the server keeps messing up the orders. A lot of food was given away that night.. I'd give it another chance though.
The toasted raviolis was definitely AMAZING though!
Great atmosphere and fantastic flavorful food!
Great place to go to get some "hill" Italian food. Overall the food was excellent here, we had salads and spaghetti. I particularly liked the spaghetti sauce used. Service was good, as was the offerings from the bar. Highly recommended.
Heard I had to try a place on the Hill and chose Mama's. All dishes I had appeared to be from scratch, generous proportions, and timely service. I had the seafood manicotti and my girlfriend had the chicken Alfredo. Both were absolutely amazing. Also make sure you try the toasted ravioli.
If your expecting Olive Garden don't, this is better, and worth the drive.
My husband took me here when we first started dating, 9 years ago. We went at least twice a month. Then the service and food started to go down hill and we quit going. Last night, after 6 years, we returned. We were delighted! Everything tasted better than the very first time we went. Our waiter was excellent! Definitely will be back!!
The food was DELICIOUS! And our waiter was wonderful. We went here for dinner and ordered seafood pasta n salad and baked lasagna n salad. The salad was brought out with house dressing which was tasty but a little sweet for us. (Hence the four star)Then the pastas (I heard Angela singing). My seafood pasta had large shrimp and scallops it was amazing. My husband got the baked lasagna and I'm not a fan of red sauce but looked awesome and he said it tasted better than it looked. The portions were huge. Our waiter was so attentive and courteous (and actually spoke Italian most places on the hill do not). We had a great dinner and highly recommend Mamas.
Delicious! My boyfriend and I had a wonderful dinner here recently and can't wait to go back!
He was happy with his steak and I, my seafood ravioli- great portion size, delicious toasted ravioli for a starter as well. Every restaurant on The Hill says their toasted ravioli is the best but out of all the ones I've tried Mama's had the most delicious seasoning! There was a lot of options on the menu and we can't wait to get back to try their pizza.
I will say the downside to coming here is that the table we sat at was rather small for the two of us. however, it was a four person table so I couldn't imagine 4 people comfortably having elbow room digging into pasta. The restaurant itself felt maybe a little dirty or structurally cheap, wasn't wild about the ambiance or lack there of really BUT that's something I'd look past to be able to have another delicious meal. Plus, outdoor seating as an option is always great!
Hands down best Italian food I have ever eaten.
Freakin awesome!
Amazing food. Amazing service
The best damn red gravy under the sun! I would cut a fool to get the last serving of veal parmigiana! I eat here every time I come to STL.
I had my rehearsal dinner at Mama's last week. It was the best rehearsal dinner I have been to. The owners Andrea & Lance and their staff went above and beyond to make it better than expected. The decor and venue were beautiful and spacious, and the food was DELICIOUS. People are still telling me how wonderful the evening was. We have no complaints and will definitely be back many times. The event room downstairs is great if you're looking to host an event with great food.
I love MAMAS
This truly is a family restaurant that is family friendly. The staff is always amazing! We love Tony, Singing Mike, Lauren and Kim (manager)! My favorite part is finding out what special dessert Tony made for Saturday night.
OUTSTANDING place to eat ?? Excellent service as well! DEFINATELY will be eating there on our next trip to STL in July
Love going to Mama's every time I visit Stl. My go to place on the hill. Make sure to try the toasted ravioli and veal Parmesan.
Everything that passed my lips was not just good, but exceptional: Salad, bread, toasted ravioli, green beans, eggplant parmigiana, and cheesecake. Loved it all!
We loved everything we had. Bring your appetite if you’re going for the lasagna. Wow ... massive portion of the best lasagna I ever had. Great food, friendly atmosphere, and reasonable prices. Our new favorite Italian Restaurant.
Great service and delicious food. I thought I had had Italian food before, but I was apparently wrong. I devoured almost all of the table salad. Pizza was delicious and I'm not normally crazy about pizza. One thing, people were walking in left and right with reservations heading straight for their tables. There is no seating for those waiting. Ugh. And, it is standing room only by the door.
Had mother's day brunch here - they offered a strong selection of food. The fried cannelloni was a favorite and I ate far more smoked salmon than was sensible. Service was attentive, which was a great perk. Not my favorite on the hill, but definitely worth checking out.
Seafood ravioli was awesome- our service was great!! We love going here!!
Food was delicious and the service was exceptional! Lauren did a great job serving our large party.
We had a group of 14 and Lauren was fantastic! The food was amazing and the atmosphere was beautiful! We will definitely be back! Thank you making my moms 70th bday a memorable one!!
Excellent food and friendly service!
This place was amazing. Very family friendly. The wait staff was wonderful and kind.make sure to call ahead for a reservation though! But if you have to wait, the food is worth the wait! I'm from out of town, but I will definitely come here again!
Excellent service and amazing food! Really enjoyed our dinner selections.
If I came back ten times, I'd happily get the same thing every time. We started with the toasted ravioli as an appetizer - perhaps it's a little pricey for the portion but the quality and taste was magnificent. The entire experience was prompt, the waitress was excellent, and the food came SO quickly. I loved my entree. It was tortellini ala papa and I absolutely loved it. Ate every bite. I can't recommend this place enough. PS: The tiramisu is out of this world.
It’s very good food. Very authentic. Very friendly and caring staff.
Awesome!
Best Italian on the hill!!
We chose Mama's on the Hill for dinner while visiting St. Louis and we are so glad we did! The food was phenomenal. We started with the Toasted Ravioli appetizer and while the ravioli themselves were nothing special, the marinara sauce was! I had the Lasagna and while I can't pinpoint the type of cheese, there was a cheese that was so creamy and it truly made the dish. My boyfriend had the Seafood Linguini and we were both extremely impressed with the seafood flavor in the sauce- the seafood flavor didn't come just from the seafood in the pasta which really made it delicious. Our waiter, Tony, makes homemade desserts and we chose the Tiramisu, which was also delicious. We would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to have an authentic Italian meal on The Hill! We even bought a cooler and some ice to take our leftovers home because we couldn't bear the idea of such delicious food going to waste!
My family has had several occasions to celebrate with Mama Campisi's. Their banquet room is spacious and comfortable. We come back, not only for the family and great food but also for the piece of mind that the staff takes care of everything. Most recently we celebrated a baby shower with approximately 30 people. We had enough room to walk around and visit. Our server, Lauren, offered suggestions, made sure everyone's bellies were full and brightened the room with her beautiful smile! John kept the tables clear, the drinks and trays full and was never far away when we needed something extra. Time & time we return to Mama Campisi's for fabulous food, professional service and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Thank you, Mama's!!!
I visited the restaurant on a Saturday night with a large party. We filled their lower level. The food was quite good. They seemed overwhelmed by the size of our group although we had given liberal notice. It's hard to separate the experience into food and service. If you go, go small. Enjoy. They provide a quality of food worth multiple times.
was one of the best spaghetti and meatballs I've had anywhere definitely better than the Spaghetti Factory what recommend to anyone looking for a great Italian dinner definitely will go back. The wait staff was amazing couldn't have asked for better service
Yummy yummy. Anything I've ever eaten there has been delicious.
This restaurant truly embraces what the hill is all about. Family and great food!
Have not eaten here since Christmas but the staff, the food, and the atmosphere is beyond awesome. We will be heading that way soon! Good people and good food!
Love the people, love the food... House salad, chicken spedini, creamed spinach and bruschetta are some of my faves, but everything is delish.
Andrea Ervin and her crew are the absolute best!! We now live in Tennessee but a stop at Mama’s is a must when we come through St Louis! The people, the food,’the service are all absolutely superb!!
Mama’s on the Hill is a wonderful restaurant that has become one of our family favorites. We highly recommend to everyone!
Great food! Great service! Great atmosphere!
And Awesome on the pocket book ?
Great place I recommend the lasagna or seafood pasta!
Fantastic food. Myself, my husband and my sons all at something different and it was all incredible. Liz the waitress was so friendly and super helpful, she made it a lovely experience. Wished i lived closer or maybe not because i would gain so much weight. Thank you Mamas.
Amazing food, wonderful atmosphere. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Simply some of the best Italian food around. If you are in St. Louis, make a point to come here, you won't be disappointed!
Mamas never disappoints. Their seafood pasta is to die for!!!!!
A few months ago I had lobster raviolis at Olive Garden and I fell in love. Sadly they were limited time only. After searching high and low I finally found something similar here. Their Seafood Ravioli was absolutely delicious!!! It totally settled that craving! We only got take out, but when walking in I was greeted instantly and taken care of right away. I would give 5 stars however... they charge 8$+ for toasted ravs which is what my boyfriend got. They were very small. Portion was small ... for being a Italian restaurant on the hill their T Ravs could be better.
In town from Atlanta. What a wonderful place. Wife in a wheelchair no worries. Three strong men carry her and the chair right on. Oh, the food and wait staff were best we have had in 20+ years.
I visited Mama's with a rather large group of friends on a Chorus Tour. We enjoyed the food. I enjoyed my Seafood Linguine and would order it again. Communication about the details of the payment became muddied and there was a lengthy wait between our arrival and the serving of food. Payment bogged down. It was not pretty. Despite the confusion, I would return if in the area again.
Great food and service. I took my 3 grandchildren and the waitress was amazing with them. Amazing spaghetti and meatballs !
Rabbit bolognese for dinner last night and pollo spedini for lunch
Especiale!
Great food, Great Service! Seafood Liguini was excellent.
Food was excellent. Service was great. It was a great old school feeling restaurant. My grandson tried their pasta challenge. It was a 3 lb meat a ball 3 lb of pasta and sauce. He is 13 and he ate half of the meat a ball and some of the pasta. We will be going back again when we come home to St. Louis.
The food was divine..
Our waiter Tommy was the best, and attended to the 2 kids perfectly.
Family dinner was perfectly done....
Thank you from all the Ragusa family and extended family...
Lauren made our dining at Mamas very memorable. We enjoyed the toasted ravioli and our meals. We were just driving thru from Detroit. She have us the lowdown on where to get Gooey Butter Cake. Plus purchased two bottles of Mamas Salad Dressing for home. This place was full of people enjoying good food and conversations like in any Italian home kitchen.
Never have I ever had food so full of flavor! Will for sure be back
This was some of the best Italian food around St. Louis. We went for lunch on a Sunday, and it was fantastic! The wait staff was awesome, and the food...OMG! the food! Thank goodness they were one of the few that are actually open on Sunday on the Hill! Kudos to the staff and cooks!
Popular place on a Saturday night. We had an hour wait. It was worth it. I had the spaghetti with marinara sauce. It was delicious. My husband had their lasagna. It was delicious, as well. We will make reservations the next time we travel to St. Louis.
We were able to make a reservation for our party the day prior to avoid a long wait. They got us seated when we arrived on time and the food was absolutely delicious. Nothing beats authentic Italian food from the Hill, and Mama's is a great example of the culinary delights of the area. Also as we were there for a birthday celebration one of their staff came out to bring ice cream to the birthday girl and sing her Happy Birthday in Italian with an amazing voice! (I assume it was Happy Birthday, really he could have been singing anything and it would have sounded just as good.)
If you're looking for great food and a good atmosphere, go here! Just make a reservation if you want to go on popular nights or times.
Fantastic food! Great service. Our waiter was great at giving recommendations and history telling. Food was fast and perfect. Will definitely return
Food and service was amazing! We will definitely return.
We were passing through from Illinois back home to Texas and wanted some great Italian food. To be truthful, we chose you guys because of the Campisi name. We have a restaurant in Dallas we love by that name. You did not disappoint! We were lucky we arrived just before 5 since we didn't have a reservation and quickly realized it was prom night. We shared the fried raviolis and they were wonderful. The salad dressing was soooo good! I had spaghetti with your amazing meatballs and the hubby had a pizza. We shared it all and had to box up some to go. It was all so good. Then even though we were stuffed, we split a piece of tiramisu. It was to-die-for! So glad we found you guys, and our waitress was super sweet and attentive. We will definitely try to visit again if we make it back that way.
Today was my first visit to Mama's and it won't be my last. Toasted Ravioli and Bruschetta for appetizers delicious. Side salad was one of the best I have had on the Hill. I had the Lasagna and it was fabulous. My friends had Chicken Spedini and Pasta Com Broccoli both very good. Great service. Would highly recommend.
Another charming family Italian place that captures my heart. It's small and cozy, the food is super, and the service is good. The decor is fun as well. I understand they lay claim to the best ravioli in St. Louis, but I have never had it here, so I cannot offer an opinion.
The best Italian food I have EVER had. Yes EVER!!! I am from CHICAGO and went to school next to little Italy and had my share of Italian cuisine. The staff was extremely friendly. Spoke with andrea ( owner) and she was so kindly. Please go here.... you will LOVE IT!!
The food was fantastic atmosphere was awesome and our waitress Lauren was above excellent I highly recommend
We have had several great experiences here and one that was awful. We will definitely give it another shot! Food is always great.
Another day another old school Italian red sauce joint on The Hill. I hadn't been here in a long time since before the visit of Restaurant Impossible and dropping Campisi's from the name. We were fairly early on a weeknight and there were about six occupied tables. We ordered an order of toasted ravioli just after we sat down because they, in addition to at least one other restaurant, claim to have the "original" toasted ravioli. After a chance to read through the menu I chose the Penne Pasta ala Vodka and my dinner date chose the Baked Lasagna. Whether this toasted ravioli is original or not it appeared to be the same frozen toasted ravioli every other restaurant serves. There was nothing unique or free form about it. They were uniform and the edges were crimped. It was fine but not remarkable. When our entrees arrived and we saw the lasagna we could not believe it. It was huge and very tasty. I was looking forward to my Penne alla Vodka because it's one of my favorite dishes but not something that is very common around St. Louis. This was a very good version. The red onions gave it a lot of flavor and the sauce (a mixture of cream and tomato emulsified with vodka) was not too heavy and really tasty. The service was speedy and friendly and I must say I liked this. I'd skip the toasted ravioli next time but I'd absolutely return. I'm probably at a 3.5 but I'll round up to 4.
The atmosphere totally complimented the quality of the food - Excellent!! The meal took me back to my childhood, growing up in a large Italian family, Sundays after morning Mass , 20-30 people in my Nana and Papa's house around the table.
The portions were large, the wine was excellent, and our server Josh, was most attentive to our every need. Mama's is a must visit for a traditional Italian meal - 5 stars out of 5!
We had a party of seven. We could not ask for better service and the food was out of this world! It was our first time there and will definitely go back.
Great food, great atmosphere we really enjoyed our evening.
Delicious! Great food, great service! We loved it!
Mama’s is part of every trip to St Louis! BEST toasted ravioli, pizza & cannoli! My favorite restaurant! ??
OMG
Three letters is all this place needs.
It's Sunday morning after St Patrick's day in STL. Entire Italian (not Irish) Hill is a sleep. Our Uber diver was polite and drove us around until we were near a business that was open. Missouri Baking Company is open and perhaps few other places are open. Church is open.
Mama's is OPEN and serving breakfast. What a delight to encounter and visit this establishment! It's the attitude and culture that the owners instill from generations to generations into their team to whom we talk and place orders with. Superb organization, with politeness, values, culture, attitude and willingness to treat its patrons.
A total 360 from my experience at Starbucks at Hyatt neat the Arch. And, I live in the town where Starbucks was founded and has a headquarters. It makes me think about the corporate culture and values! Perhaps Starbucks has a willingness and capacity to improve!
Of course we could not order, we could have, Every items on the menu. Give me a break. It was breakfast time and we were going for brunch. We settled for coffee and Mama's original creation- toasted revs. Coffee in a ceramic cup and saucer was the experience I was looking for. And, Mama's made it happen. We tried both rev's filled with cheese and meat. Oh, were they delicious!
We thought of buying a house in the neighborhood so that we are close to Mama's! That's how much we loved it.
Without asking, we were treated with their signature toast. Was it delicious with olive oil! For breakfast, for me, that's pushing it. But I did manage to soak up some olive oil along with my coffee. Then come a taste of STL signature Provel cheese. We were glad it was simply grated and not baked. It's a mix of cheddar, Swiss and Provolone. It's STL original.
Have you been to Mama's? Add it to your list. You won't regret!
Dine in or carry out its hard to beat their pasta! Mamas really seperates themselves from chain Italian Restaurants.
Fantastic service; the food was out of this world. Beautiful time spent with family and a very special friend!! So glad we went to Mama's!! Thanks to all who made our lunch so amazing...
The Food is FANTASTIC! Pollo Saltimbocca was SO delicious! And the house salad dressing, YUM!!!
I took a group of senior residents on an outing that included lunch at Mama’s. The service was exemplary and food was absolutely delicious! I called in advance to let them know we were coming and let them know several would have walkers and they said they would absolutely come out to assist - and they did! We will definitely be back and I would recommend them to anyone. Great job and thank you for helping me give my residents a great outing!
I am very happy we chose to eat at Mama's On the Hill today. It's always "iffy" when a place gets 3-3 1/2 stars. That means people either hated it or loved it. We literally had some of the best food and service today. The lasagna was the absolutely best we have ever had. And the Rigatoni Carbonara was fantastic. Their house salad, also amazing. The Bruschetta was delicious and fresh. Paired with a fantastic wine list and you end up with perfection. And the service was phenomenal as well. We will definitely be back. I can't wait for next time!!
Lost are reservation even after confirming earlier in the day. Lauren came over and immediately seated us. We look forward to coming here every time we are in town visiting our son. Thanks Lauren. Best food on the hill!
We had a party of 6. Very Nice atmosphere. Food was completely awesome!!! Service was stellar.
Another trip to Mama's and another wonderful experience this weekend. This place gets pretty packed on Saturday nights, so we made a reservation for our party of 5 about a week in advance. We were seated next to a really cool rack of pallets with wine bottles and string lights, which really set the mood for our intimate dinner.
The staff here are hands-down the best that I have encountered at any local restaurant. They know all of their regular customers by name and order, and go above any beyond to make sure every experience is as great as the last. This is a family-owned establishment, and it is a common occurrence to see the owner and her daughter serving customers and bringing out food personally.
The food itself is delicious. I have never had a dish that I didn't enjoy. Everything from the appetizers (try the cheese balls!) to the salads (buy a bottle of their dressing to take home - trust me) and entrees is top-notch. It's a challenge to save room for dessert, which you definitely should do because it is delicious. They make authentic Italian desserts in-house, and you can tell that they are prepared with care.
12/10 would recommend.
Stopped in Here impromptu .. what a delightful surprise ! No long lines on a busy Friday on The Hill . We had a glass of Super Tuscan, the house salad to die for, we split both the Minestrone which was so fabulous and the Italian Sausage Sandwich!
We had a 20 wait for a table at 1:30 pm on a Sunday.
The salad was great
The Baked Lasagna was incredible! There was enough for 2 meals as was the pizza.
We will be back.
I live just a half a block from mamas and from time to time order delivery from there and enjoy it ever so much! Another fine restaurant on the hill! Ciao
This is my daughter’s favorite place to eat. She & her boyfriend lives on the hill. I’m so glad she has taken me over the years. I love the remodel???? the food is outstanding, service is wonderful & I’ll be back!!
Amazing food and drinks ! Will definitely be back
The seafood ravioli was amazing and my wife had lasagna it was great ????????
The food and service were both outstanding. We will be back!
Pizza was very good. Got the "King of the Hill" and of course no trip to Mama's would be complete without an order of toasted ravioli....
Hands down the best Italian food! Quaint little place, lovely atmosphere!
Never been to The Hill first time eating here at this place.. Was the best hands down that I have ever had..
Amazing food and amazing wait staff! Will definitely be back!
Have been waiting years to try all the restaurants on The Hill. First one was here and it was AMAZING food.
Even though they were absolutely slammed, the service was great and the food was even better. We were told that any place in the Hill was going to be good, and Mama’s On The Hill lived up to our expectations
It was my daughter's first time eating on The Hill and she LOVED it!
I cannot express how delicious and delightful this restaurant is! My friend and I were in from Indiana wanting authentic Italian for the first time ever! We could not have been happier! Thank you to the lovely gentleman for the wine with our lunch and the outstanding service. I want to try everything! We will be back! ?????? Salud! ????????
We love this place! It's one of many great places on the hill, but the staff sets them apart. Lauren and Tony are both amazing servers! The food is wonderful and the service is amazing. What else could you ask for?
The food was amazing and the service was excellent! I will definitely return when visiting the area again.
Great family atmosphere! Strongly suggest getting reservations. We had reservations and were still placed on the waiting list. We had drinks at the bar while we waited for our table.
Once we were seated, the service was prompt! Hubby ordered the seafood manicotti and I ordered the seafood linguini with side salad. We were given a basket of white bread with our salads.
After dinner, we ordered the limoncello dessert to share!
We both loved our meals. If you are looking for great Italian food where the portions are large for the price.... this is your place.
A surprise luncheon on Valentines Day by my husband. We both really enjoyed the food, wine and our server was terrific. Most definitely will go back in the near future.
Fantastic food and service!! Great Valentine's Day spot or any occasion
After a long day of traveling from California, when we landed we asked our car rental for dinner suggestions, though quite the drive from the airport it was so worth it! It felt like I was eating at home and the food was authentic as all heck! Saddens me when I start to crave it since I'm so far away! Overall great!
Good, reasonably priced option on the hill. The staff is always nice and helpful. It's probably not the first place most people think of when they do to the hill, but we find ourselves coming here quite often. There is usually not much of a wait and the food is good.
Food was so delicious! The waiter was very friendly. This is such a cute restaurant. I highly recommend it!
Great food and great staff. Love this place!!! Been going here for years. Lauren rocks.
Great service and food. Perfect portions well cooked. Tons to pick from.
The best minestrone soup anyplace. Even had to bring some home for tomorrow.
Great service! And the food..... Delizioso! ??
We had a very attentive waiter, the atmosphere was great, and the food was simply amazing! We will definitely be back! Keep up the good work!
wonderful food, great staff, and delicious desserts!!
Food was amazing! The people were also very amazing. We had the toasted ravioli and I could’ve eaten 12 orders of that. Noise level was a tad high, but how can that be controlled? All in all, great experience. Thank you! I don’t think I’ll ever be able to eat meatballs anywhere else.
Mama's on the Hill is a great example of eating in comfort. Located on a corner in The Hill, the building is true to its roots in size and style. I visited on a Saturday night with 5 dinner buds and was excited about having reservations since the place was packed. They use every bit of space in the place, but can accommodate a group very well. There is also a small bar area with tvs.
We were seated immediately and our server was very attentive and prompt. We started with the eggplant Parmesan and cheese bites. The eggplant was seasoned well and the right consistency. The cheese bites were addictive.
I opted for the Seafood Ravioli for my main event. This dish was amazing. The richness of the sauce, the flavor and seasoning and the ravs were filled with seafood perfectly.
Overall, a wonderful evening and looking forward to future visits. Gotta get that lasagna!
This restaurant has a fine menu of delicious Italian dishes. The toasted ravioli is famous in St. Louis making it a must eat in the city. Customer service is excellent. We ordered the platter to sample a bit of the best appetizers and we were quite pleased. Don't forget to save room for a cannoli.
Our family was visiting St. Louis and wanted the kids to get some of the iconic tastes of the city, which include toasted ravioli and thin crust pizza with provel cheese. We couldn't have been happier with our experience at Mama's On the Hill, where we could order both. We were graciously shown to a round table where the kids got to learn some manners, and the host was so forgiving and treated us like royalty. The food was some of the best (as well as old-world authentic) Italian we have ever had, yet the price was very reasonable. My wife also ordered the Caesar Salad and it was exceptional. Thank you so much for a lovely dinner. We are still talking about how good it was!
Absolutely amazing!!!!! Great Good! Great service! Large portions at a reasonable price. Thank you Tommy for making our first experience one to remember always. And also for the site seeing information. Highly recommend going here.
We went here on New Year's Day for dinner with family and it was a great experience...even with a toddler! First of all, they took a reservation which seems to be rare these days. They had a high chair ready for us and very friendly staff over the phone and when we arrived. Our waitress was excellent and the food was so good! Comfort Italian food with a classy presentation. Would eat here again for sure.
Everything was amazing!! So glad we live 3 houses down!!
All star restaurant ?? Family friendly and food was awesome ??
Great 1st visit! Food and service were excellent! We will visit again when in the area. Thank you "Tony" for great service!
Stanwyck and I came for lunch December 19. We had the date set a while ago, but hadn't solidified a destination.
I recently posted on Facebook about a rerun on The Cooking Channel "Best Thing I Ever Ate -- Finger Food" (original episode 8.8.11), in which Mama Toscano's toasted ravioli was touted by Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli.
And THAT'S when we decided on our lunch destination.
Brian was our attentive and knowledgeable server.
I am not from St. Louis and gave up on toasted ravioli long ago after too many over-fried, greasy and scantily filled (with dry ingredients) toasted ravs.
But no . . . Stanwyck wanted to share an order. So we did.
Holy mackerel -- THIS is toasted ravioli at its finest. Hot out of the fryer, browned beautifully, generous filling that was juicy and tasty.
Served with Mama's own marinara sauce, which was so good.
We both wanted a salad. Stanwyck ordered a "regular" of the house salad: mixed greens, roasted red peppers, green onions, provel and parm dressed with their homemade balsamic Italian dressing.
I ordered a large of the house salad, BUT this was to be my entre, so I asked Brian if they could put some meat on it. My thinking was: they have pizza, they have meat. Just put it in a salad.
Brian checked with the chef. Came back soon saying the chef would personally make my salad, and it would be $10.99. Oh, YIPPEE!!
But wait . . . there's more. Stanwyck ordered an entre: seafood linguine.
My salad was to come out when Stanwyck's entre came out. And it worked perfectly.
She got her salad ahead of time with no rush on the delivery of the entrees. And she liked it a lot. She's not from St. Louis either, but the provel was A-OK with her.
I DO so despise when entrees come out too soon when you're still trying to enjoy your pre-meal soup or salad. It just makes me feel like they're rushing me out. This DIDN'T happen here. We were on a leisurely schedule, and I think Brian got our pace.
Down to entrees:
Stanwyck's seafood linguine was beautiful. Jumbo tail-on shrimp a-plenty, tender scallops (but they didn't have a sear) and a little langostino in its shell in the middle. Great presentation with plenty of linguine in a rich white sauce.
She was a-tryin' to get the langostino out of its shell with a fork and knife. I suggested fingers, and she pulled out a beautiful piece of meat. WHOA!!
My now-chef salad was massive, with all the great salad ingredients, but lots of meat. I could guess what the meats were, but I don't know. They were sliced thinly in beautiful strips and blended so well with the other salad ingredients. Good bites all the way around.
We COULD have used a forklift to get our to-go vessels out of there.
As for me, my salad lasted four more meals.
Excellent food and fantastic staff. We waited at the bar for our table and the bartender was wonderfull with our 3 kids, talking to them, asking questions, joking around. Our waiter was attentive but not over bearing, which I appreciated. It was our first visit but it won’t be our last. Well worth the 35 minute drive!
Food - A+, Dining Experience - F. We visited last night (Thursday), called ahead for a 6:30 reservation. When we arrived, restaurant was packed. (Also parking is on street only, plan ahead) We waited approx 15-20 minutes for our table. While we waited another six person party came into restaurant with no reservation. Both parties were seated at same time. So much for a reservation! Also the table we were seated at was wedged between two other six parties tables.
We chose the restaurant because my 7 year daughter saw on television it's 4 pound meatball. challenge. The menu said this meatball was available anytime Monday thru Thursday but only after 4pm on weekends & with a 24 hour advance notice. Once seated I inquired about the meatball, waitress immediately said it wasn't available without a 24 hr notice & also it couldn't be purchased a la carte without the challenge. I said the menu doesn't state none of this. Waitress said the manager could explain. We waited several minutes, finally the manager arrived basically saying the same as the waitress. My issue was the manager's tone, she could have cared less I was spending money at her restaurant, didn't care a 7 year wanted to experience the 4 lb meatball. She kept saying the loss in revenue if a table of four split the 4lb meatball. I said a simple solution in the future is to price it to share at $10 -$12 person as this is average entree per menu. If you want to experience a 4lb meatball- money isn't an issue.
Food was excellent but overall dining experience was subpar due to manager's attitude & with all the choices in the hill district I won't be back to Mama's.
I got the manicotti and it was so delicious!! I would definitely recommend.
I dined in for lunch a few days ago. It being my first time I was excited to try so many things on the menu. Our waitress was so friendly and very attentive, also gave all of us great recommendations! They let us sample the wine before we bought and they even brought out one of their signature dishes for us to try since it was our first time! I ended up getting the eggplant and loved it! GREAT customer service, I will most definitely be back to Mamas soon!

No one had not even one complaint. A very excellent place to enjoy a wonderful meal!
My fiancé and I love this place! The best service, best Italian food I recommend it to everyone.
Best Pizza I have ever had! Service was good the only drawback was the parking is terrible
We had a great time, a great dinner, and great service. Always fun to go to The Hill... a true local treasure. Wonderful chicken spedini and seafood linguine. Couldn’t finish it all.
I went here with my family before a Blues game as a birthday celebration for 3 of us that had birthdays in November. It was my first trip to Mama's. The place is very small in a residential area that makes parking a little tough.
We had toasted ravioli (small), calamari, and stuffed mushrooms to start. Everyone tried something different, and I couldn't believe how large the portions were. My favorite was probably the seafood pasta. I ordered the linguine salsiccia which was incredibly spicy but very tasty.
The desserts looked great, but we had eaten too much already and decided to pass. I would recommend Mama's for anyone looking to grab an italian dinner.
Great food, quick service! Will definitely recommend. We'll be back!
Wow this place is fantastic. Our waitress was funny and informative. The food was worth the drive (60miles). I highly recommend the calamari and the seafood ravioli. Plus the bread was good and served with real butter. And last but not least dessert. They serve an amazing tiramisu. Come hungry.
This place is amazing. I was incredibly impressed. I had the classic fettuccine Alfredo and it was the best Italian meal I've ever had (and I come from a long line of Italians). My boyfriend had the spaghetti on the Hill with meatballs and his meatballs were delicious. My boyfriends sisters got the prosciutto pizza, and while they might've preferred another cheese they really enjoyed their meal. Whenever I come back to St. Louis, this will be the go-to!
Many authentic entrées to choose from so we have to go back and try them all , delicious indeed ?
Delicious meal all around! Excellent waitress-homemade tiramisu-great glass of wine! Nice cozy/casual atmosphere and we’ll be back soon!
Once a year visit to StL and somehow, I make my way to Mama's. I've been to several other Hill restaurants, but Mama's always brings me back. Lasagna is great and huge. The service is terrific. I can't wait for next year
The atmosphere and service was great!! I had the toasted ravioli and a caesar salad and both were spectacular. Ordered the classic Spaghetti and meatballs and it was also great! I will go back for sure.
Staying in the area for treatment and glad I found this place! Too bad they don't have a frequent visitor punch card :)
Delicious! Had several different dishes....all came out superb!
Outstanding cuisine. Excellent service our waiter was perfect. The food was very reasonably price considering the quality of it. Nice atmosphere. In a quaint neighbourhood. Highly recommended. P. S. I would strongly recommend the lasagna I am of Italian and Spanish descent and I've had lasagna many many times nothing like this incredible
Best manicotti I have ever had! The house salad was delicious as well!
Best toasted ravioli's on the Hill.... had the spaghetti with meat sauce and house salad.
The food was amazing and service exceptional.
Delicious food, great atmosphere, excellent service! Love it!!!
Omg so good. I had the lasagna and it was wonderful. My wife had the seafood ravioli and she loved it. Great selection of wines. Nice decor and music. Will be going back
Food is fantastic. We are never disappointed. However, we did have a very rude waiter once. He was an older gentleman, not that it is an excuse. But very abrasive and rude. Hopefully it was just a bad day for him. We eat here once a year and only had that experience one time.
Not a bad thing to say about this place. Full disclosure I've not been to EVERY place on the Hill (probably half) but of the ones I've been to, this is my favorite. A reasonable wine selection at reasonable cost. Delicious Calamari, toasted ravioli and stuffed mushrooms for starters.
For my entre I ordered the spaghetti. Now I'm no Italian but I have to say this was the best spaghetti I think I've had. You could truly tell a difference in the noodles alone, much less the incredible sauce and meatballs. My wife ordered the cannelloni and as much as I loved my meal, hers may have been better! Seasoned perfectly with Alfredo sauce on top.
Servers were real life Italian that hummed Frankie Valli and Frank Sinatra songs while they were walking around.
I want to try more places on the Hill, but honestly it will be hard not to go back there next time.
On top of it all I found it to be more affordable than most places. All in all we ordered three glasses a wine, a beer, a large appetizer plate, two entrees AND another entre to give to a neighbor on her death bed (we expect no reimbursement) and all of that was under $100. No way do you get that for that price at most places on the Hill.
Lovely night. I was in town alone for business and has such personalized service as the bar by both Kim and the staff. Excellent food and yummy wine. Best part of my trip so far.
Our first time visiting Mama's On the Hill. We are so glad we did. It was my daughters 17th birthday and we wanted a delicious meal and we got it. There were four of us and we all ordered something different and loved it. The toasted ravioli and garlic bread appetizer were sooo good. Our meal consisted of lasagna, pasta con broccoli, chicken fettuccine and tortellini ala papa. I highly recommend you visit and enjoy yourself.
The service was great! He was both funny and attentive.
Interesting fun fact: we were informed by our server that this was the place the original toasted ravioli was created!
We went for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon, no wait for a table. The host and busboys were very friendly, our waitress not so much. The toasted ravioli was pretty basic, nothing real special. The house side salad was fantastic, the dressing was delicious. The veal parmesaen was a bit on the chewy side. According to my dining companions the fettuccine Alfredo, with added chicken, was spectacular. The best dish of the night was the four cheese ravioli, would definitely recommend!
Cool old school Italian restaurant vibe. Intimate setting inside. Awesome food, massive portions. They literally have a meat ball the size of a human head! Great service. Outside the parking can be difficult depending on when you come by. Great Italian eatery.
Our first visit to this location was at lunch during the Gateway Cup so I don't believe that the level of service is a good indicator of what is normal. I ordered the house Chardonnay and it was very good. I became very tipsy from two servings. We ordered the toasted raviolis and those tasted fine but I did find a hair in the marinara sauce. I ordered the carbonara and the taste was good but there was too much sun-dried tomato. My husband ordered the Pasta con broccoli and was pleased. Each plate was large and we both had leftovers. I did wish that we had a bread or some breadsticks to go with the large amount of sauce on each dish.
I ended up at Mama's with my parents after a Cardinals game because Rigazzi's was closed. It turned out well, though, because we loved Mama's! The interior is cute and cozy, not too upscale but not cheesy either. Our server was friendly and quick, even when they got slammed with more post-game goers. The food was amazing! I got a house salad, and it was very satisfying. Filling and traditional-yet-unique enough to be interesting. We also had fettuccine alfredo, which was some of the best I've had in a long time! The cheese garlic bread was also very tasty.
The Hill certainly has some fancier and way more expensive Italian places, but Mama's is more my style. Comfortable, delicious, easy-going, and reasonable.
Very much worth the drive. Stellar food, great staff and lovely atmosphere. We were still talking about this place, the next day.
Would definitely recommend Mama's! Come hungry! We chose this place because we had heard it was good, had not tried it before, & it is one of the few places that take reservations on Saturday night.
We had a party of 6, each ordering a different entree. Lasagne, seafood linguine, seafood ravioli, cheese ravioli, spaghetti, & veal Marsala. We also had the combination appetizer. We had to try the place who invented the toasted ravioli's which were good, but really loved the mushrooms who were on this plate also.
Most of agreed that the seafood ravioli was the pick of the night, with it's delicious creamy sauce all over it and tiny shrimp. Or maybe the lasagne was delicious, packed with cheese and flavors. Or maybe the big shrimp and scallops on the fettuccini that were so tasty. Wait, the veal was so different from the rest it's hard to compare except it was tender and delicious. As you can see we can't pick one thing, it was all great!
Stopped in for a great little Italian meal on a Sunday night! Would DEFINITELY come back.
Server Nate was great. Food was great. Wait time on the food was a little long but it was worth it. The butter was also amazing!
Had the Gamberoni scamp paired with the bucci verdicchio! So flavorful and perfectly cooked scampi. Their toasted ravioli is the best I've tasted in St. Louis and I've tasted a lot! Calamari and bruschetta were very tasty as well. They treat you like family and were very attentive. Maybe even too attentive with the water:)I think I found my favorite Italian restaurant on the "hill"!
We had our wedding rehearsal dinner at Mama's on the Hill in April and they exceeded our expectations. We had a few out of town guests and wanted them to get The Hill experience and Mama's definitely delivered! Andrea really worked with us to customize our menu selections and it was delicious! We chose a few appetizers and the plated dinner option with salad, a few pasta choices and chicken marsala. The cannoli's were definitely a highlight. The only negative at all was that the ceiling is a little low and there is a beam some of the taller guests had to duck under, but since we were seated most of the time it wasn't really an issue. Thanks, Mama's!!
The food was absolutely delicious! However, we ordered it 'To Go' which is an option listed here on Yelp. When we arrived to pick it up, the entire staff seemed very confused about the transaction. Our food was definitely not ready, nor did I have a receipt to sign. Everyone was very polite though and they did eventually get us our order.
Loved spending an evening at Mama's. Our waitress was the best she took a great picture for us in front of the MAMAS corks even getting up on the chair to get us in a good light toasted ravioli to start ( 2-orders) and manicotti. Was just perfect for us out of towners. Great food great service and staff. Had to buy a shirt on the way out since we had such a great meal. Easy parking and great atmosphere for kids and adults. Will come back when we are in town again
We came in looking for an Italian beef sandwich, not realizing it was only available for lunch. The dinner menu looked great, but we ended up just getting a couple shots, and having a conversation with Mike. Great guy, and a really warm and welcoming place. We'll definitely be back next time we're in town, this time for lunch! Thanks Mike!
We took the family here on the evening of July 4th and they had no trouble getting us a table after only a short wait. The fried ravioli was excellent, a must have when you're in St. Louis. Then we all had something different and shared family style. I had a red pepper ravioli dish with red onions and spinach that was out of this world. My 13-yr old son had the sea food ravioli and loved it. My oldest daughter had the manicotti which she loved. My baby had her regular spaghetti and my wife had her favorite go to lasagna. Everyone loved their meal. The bread was great too, and the service was outstanding. We couldn't have picked a better place to celebrate Independence Day as a family, in a family restaurant with great food and great people!
My boyfriend and I went here late Sunday evening just half an hour before closing time. We weren't sure if they'd serve us as we were there pretty late, but it was no problem at all. We ordered the rabbit bolognese and the seafood linguine, and we got the food way faster than we expected. Both dishes were incredibly tasty. I normally don't like mushrooms, but the ones in my bolognese had absorbed so much flavor from the amazing sauce that they really tasted good, even for me. My boyfriends linguine was super rich and creamy, so probably not the best for your heart but great for your soul. His exact words were "my tastebuds are dancing right now". I tried it too, and boy, it was good.
The portions were big so I'm glad we didn't order any salad or entree as I would never have been able to finish all, although I don't doubt that those also would have tasted great.
Our server (Nate) was really friendly and outgoing, which we really liked. He's really great with people and we were really happy with our service. We'd love to come back here!
We too, like another poster, went here after our large group (five kids and four adults) was advised by Zias that they didn't have room for us. We were told by Zias not to go to Mama's as they "heard the servers were rude", but we took a chance.
We ended up really impressed and glad we were turned away from Zias. Our service was excellent as was the food! I can't compare the two, as we were just visiting St Louis and I've never been to Zias, but we were all really happy we ended up at Mama's! Great atmosphere and perfect for large groups and families.
Hands down the best toasted ravioli I have ever eaten. Which I suppose it should be as this is the restaurant where it was invented (by accident). I got a pizza, which was also very good. The service was great and the decor was fitting for The Hill. I will definitely be returning in the near future.
We very much enjoyed our meal of veal and eggplant. Great service, very good Long Island ice tea and Malbec wine. The highlight of the meal was the dessert truffle , so good!
Visiting from California, came to mamas on the hill and had the best experience. My wife and I loved the food!!! Service and our kind waiters. Great overall experience on the hill.
Ordered the Seafood Linguine, which was amazing.
Had a glass of wine (forgot the name) which was also good! Service wasn't the best, our waitress was gone about 20 minutes at a time which was a bit of a struggle! Added the 4th star for the quality of the food!
Just like most guests who have been served a meal at Mama's, I thoroughly enjoyed this place. When we travel back to the Lou for Rams games, we have to visit the Hill for some authentic Italian food and we always end up here. Went on a Sunday night after a game. As mentioned by others, it is one of the few restaurants open on the Hill on Sunday, so it was pretty crowded. We began at the bar. Ordered a few drinks. When we were called to dinner, I asked for the check from the bartender, but it took him, seriously, about 10 minutes to get it. I understand they were busy, but I am about to give him money. Instead, he seemed to continue serving others. So I mosied on over to my table. After chowing down the bread and olive oil, we ordered an appetizer-Italian Nachos. Holy cow, these things were to die for! Sausage, tomato, cream sauce. I ordered the a dinner salad and Eggplant Parmagiana. As good as the Nachos were, the dinner salad was just as good, as far as dinner salads go. Something about the dressing, SO GOOD!! I love eggplant and order it everywhere I go. This was good, but not great. A little too much salt for my taste. Pasta sauce on it was a little bland. One of our guests ordered a beef vegetable soup that he said was excellent, the Calamari appetizer as a meal and toasted ravioli. He last two he said were okay. Another ordered Pasta Shells & Broccoli, which he said were excellent because of the sauce. So I wondered why my sauce was just okay? Funny thing, in the middle of our meal, the guy who was the bartender came by to ask how our meal was. I'm guessing he is also the owner. Very good customer service. And our waiter was a great guy, explained everything in detail. Overhead him with other customers and he seemed like he really cared about their meals. One thing, though. He was sweating profusely. My guess is he was running around so much, in and out of the kitchen, that he couldn't help but sweat. He was constantly wiping his forehead. Other than that, everything about this place was awesome and we will be returning on our next trip the St. Louis.
I should hate this place! I LOVE to make carbonara. However, after eating at Mama's, my son always compares mine to this. I never measure up. :^) Seriously, after hearing that the original Mama Campisi died (at 88) and the restaurant closed, I avoided going back after they reopened figuring that the new owners would not measure up. However, a guy in the Milwaukee airport told me about a great restaurant that he ate at. I finally figured out that it was Mama's. We went back again, and again, and again! Yeah, they have all the quirks of a family run restaurant, but I haven't had a bad meal yet. Food snobs, avoid. . Food lovers, come on in!
Some friends and I went to Mama's just after Christmas for our annual get-together. We were able to be seated right away, but had we arrived 15 minutes later I'm sure we would have been waiting. There were several large parties that night and the place was packed. Despite the crowd, we found our server to be attentive, stopping by several times after we ordered to check on us or give us a progress update. He also offered to bring our salads before our appetizers if we wanted. (We did not but the offer was nice.) Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and made several good suggestions. We decided we had to try the toasted ravioli (since they were the first to serve it) and we were not disappointed. All of my party loved it, especially the marinara dipping sauce. We all had a house salad (standard Italian salad on The Hill), but agreed the house dressing gave it an edge on the competition. We got 4 different entrees to try. All were very good, but we agreed the star was the Pollo Saltimbocca. It was creamy, salty, cheesy and altogether yummy...I am talking plate-licking yummy! We were all very happy our first dining choice for the evening had a wait list to be seated! I will definitely be going back to Mama's.
I've been here several times and I think MaMa Campisi's is a great place to eat. The food was very good, I never had a problem with the wait staff or long waiting times. My experience's have always been very pleasant and the food has always been great.
The owners are friendly and the price's are reasonable. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good Italian food on the hill.
Delicious food and outstanding restaurant! We're in Saint Louis for 4 days, came here the first night, and we're planning to return before we leave!
I'm really surprised by some of the negative reviews at this place, since every single time I have been there I have had a great experience. The food is always hot, fresh, and very good. The food is very well prices, most entrees are from $10-$25. For that price, the food is excellent. I've tried at least half of the Pasta Entrees and they have all been very tasty and satisfying. I hear they have a mean Chicken Lasagna but they only make it every now and then so I miss out. This and, to me, they could use a little bit better wine menu. Also, since it is located in the heart of the Hill the parking is on the street and can be a little tough to find a spot if they and the other nearby places are busy. I'm also pretty sure they do not make their desserts in-house, which I think they/all restaurants should, BUT the lemon cake is pretty tasty there. They have wine events which serve a different wine with a meal, I believe it's around $30 for a fun event! The waiters are pretty funny, make sure you are doing well, and modify meals as needed. I have never had bad service here, even when they are busy and have huge tables to deal with. My dad and garlic do not get along, and they modify the meals for him so that he can enjoy them as well. We like to try new places quite often, but this is always a family favorite.
Wow this was an awesome lunch. Italian beef was tasty. Mouth watering with giadinera on it. My husband ate Mama's Special 9" pizza. Amazing. Love the Provel cheese authentic to St. Louis pizzas.
We were in St. Louis for my GF's rehab and went out, our last Sunday morning, to look for brunch. We decided to go to The Hill, both of us forgetting that, in a Catholic neighborhood, looking for an open restaurant on Sunday morning might just be the dictionary definition of "stupid". We drove around and around the neighborhood, getting increasingly hungry, before spotting a neon "Open" sign in the window of a place I had mistaken for a neighborhood market. It was Mama Campisi's and, as I got out and walked around the building, I realized we were still out of luck because my GF is in a wheelchair and there was no ramp. A lady came out the front door and asked if she could help and I explained that we couldn't get the chair in. She said, "Oh, foo, we can fix that!" and two strapping young guys came out and helped me carry Judye's chair - and her - into the building.
I was a chef at a couple of Italian restaurants and think that MOST Italian places don't do a very good job, so I picked up the menu like it was a snake. But, there was a Chicken Carbonara, one of my favorite comfort foods, and it was Sunday morning, after all, so I went for it. Judye had Putanesca, which she loves. I waited with little expectation, figuring to get something barely edible. Well...
It was probably two of the best plates of food I have ever had set before me in my life; certainly in my personal Top Ten. The Carbonara was PERFECT; rich, creamy, fluffy-textured, the ideal balance of the pancetta and egg, beautifully seasoned, with a fat, juicy, moist chicken breast resting on top. Judye's Putanesca was spicy, incredibly aromatic, and had an intensity of flavor that no Italian dish of ANY kind I've eaten in Seattle has EVER had. I read the comments from other Yelpers about service and I can only conclude that maybe there's a different crew in the evening from Sunday brunch because our server was as friendly and helpful as any we've seen in years. The ONLY complaint I can make at all about Mama Campisi's is that, scanning their wine list, I found their house Chianti listed as INGLENOOK!!! I mean, THANK GOD, there were a lot of great Italian wines listed also, but...INGLENOOK CHIANTI!?!?!?
I didn't order it, so it's academic but, in all other respects, it was, for a cranky, impossible-to-please former chef like me, as accomplished a performance as I've seen from an Italian restaurant anywhere that's not located on Mulberry Street in Manhattan. The hospitality was amazing and the food...I still dream about that and wish fervently that I could find its equal here in the Northwest.
rather a bargain for the hill food. plenty of food at reasonable prices. always good and good service as well. one waiter even sings pretty well...the other thinks he can. always friendly. original home of the toasted ravioli which is chock full of beef and good red sauce. only 1 tv at the small bar, but i don't go there to watch tv. one of my favorite places.
We have been to Mama's a few times, and have always had great food. Our most recent visit was on Friday night and it once again delivered a great meal.
We both tried something new on this most recent visit and were once again pleased with something delicious. I have to say hands down though my husband's chicken saltimboca was the best thing we've ever had there. As their menu says it means "jump in your mouth" and that it does. It will be really hard not to get this next time. It's as good as it gets. I had the carbanara and it was also delicious (I'm mad at myself right now for leaving my left overs on the table). The other times we've gone our dishes have also been really good. As an appetizer we both love the stuffed mushrooms and toasted ravioli. They also have really good calamari so the sampler is a great choice as you get all 3. The small sampler is more than enough for 2. I must also add I love their olive oil stuff they bring with the bread. The herbs and seasonings in it our so delicious. My husband also swears they have the best parmesan cheese too. We've never had enough room to try dessert here.
On some evenings they have a guy there singing. While it is kind of nice, it can sometimes be annoying. He tends to come to the table and sing to the lady. It kind of makes it awkward, at least for me, but I don't like attention. He is a nice guy though.
Service is usually pretty good. All of the servers we've had have always been knowledgeable and every time we bring someone new they go over the history of the restaurant. It was a little slow getting food out on Friday, but that has nothing to do with the servers, that's the kitchen. Even though it was a little slow we still enjoyed ourselves and had a nice relaxing evening. We did notice some tables around us getting a little annoyed by the wait for food.
The only "bad" part of our visit on Friday was our salads were not cold. I didn't eat mine but my husband still ate his. I'm a little pickier with my salads though that the average person though. We didn't mention anything to our server but he must have noticed I didn't eat mine and did not charge us for it.
All in all this is a great little restaurant to eat in the Hill. We've never had to wait when we've gone and it seems to be our back up when other places on the Hill have a long wait. Maybe we should learn to just go here first.
Mama Campisi's, the restaurant that created the St. Louis favorite and traditional staple of food, the toasted ravioli, is a great place to enjoy a nice St. Louis style Italian dinner. Inside you have the charm of The Hill all rolled into the small little restaurant where you get a smile all the time.
Their food is awesome. My favorite dish of theirs is the Veal Parmesan, quite tasty. The meat is nice and soft. You don't even need a knife to cut. If you wanted you could probably stare at it, think about cutting it, and then the slice would probably magically happen.
Magically cutting veal aside, the food is really good. I wish I could go there more often than I do. Mama Campisi's a great establishment on the Hill.
Great seafood ravioli and Italian nachos! Jimmy the italian singer was interesting. Overall loved the dining experience! I will be back to see Naomi! She is a great Bartender!
When on a busy Sunday afternoon and got our party of 5 squeezed in. People kept showing up and getting seated, but I don't know where they squeezed them. They must have ninja busboys. Toasted ravioli was fair, Mama's trio was a bland mess, but the rest of the food was generous and well priced. The waiter joked with my Dad and flirted with my mom. They has an eating challenge going on at the next table, so the entire atmosphere was quite enjoyable.
Great food! Had the toasted Ravioli, Papa's Pizza (how is the crust so thin and crispy!!! just how we like it) and Tortellini Donatello. Sizable portions with enough in a box to enjoy on the trip back to Memphis. Of all the places on the hill, glad we ended up here. Now on to Ted Drewe's custard for dessert...
I went to Mama's for a late lunch. Ordered the Toasted Ravioli appetizer and the Chicken Parmesan Sandwich. Both were Fantastic! The best I've had in a very long time. Service was a bit slow, but our waitress seemed to be the only one working and is my reasoning for the 4 star rating instead of 5. When we did see her she was very pleasant and courteous. I will be coming back to try more of the menu!
Great service!!! Our server Vincenzo was helpful and truly made this a wonderful experience. The food was outstanding!
Great food, delicious wine, friendly helpful waiter---we found exactly what were looking for on The Hill!
We had a groupon for a great deal. Now that I know how good this place is, I will go back as it's worth the full price. Nice atmosphere, kinda like you're eating in a large living room. Great food. We just loved it.
This was our first time here. We were very happy. The service was great and the food was really good. My girlfriend got the baked lasagna and I got the Pasta Con Broccoli. I felt the kids menu was a little pricey especially when we were charged full price for adult sodas for the kids. I would definitely go back there.
Mama's is the best on the Hill. Great food, good wine and local tradition. The best toasted Ravioli anywhere. My favorites are Seafood linguini with huge perfectly done shrimp and the Pollo Cappellini, sauteed chicken with mushrooms and sundried tomato. Bruschetta is a must. Mike our waiter was awesome. We have been to Mama's when they were slammed on weekends and early evening when it is a bit more cozy, and the service and the food is always consistently great. Well worth the wait, just grab a glass of wine in the cozy bar until your table is ready.
Mama Campisi's is a great Italian restaurant. I had the Pollo Spedini (chicken breast breaded and stuffed with prosciutto, mushrooms, tomatoes, & provel cheese). I highly recommend this place.
They had a guy walking around singing various Italian songs. He was kind of creepy but didn't distract us from having a good time. The wait staff was excellent. Tommy Lee was very cheerful and made us feel welcome.
Tommy recommended the toasted ravioli. He actually bragged that it was the best toasted ravioli around. I have to agree with Tommy on this one.
The owner's daughter came to the table to greet us. She was very charming and I appreciated the attention. Mama Campisi's is a family establishment with an "Old World" feel.
*most recent visit was July 5th, 2010
My husband and I have eaten here on many occasions. I have never had a bad meal yet - only once did our salad look a little brown, we considered that a small thing as the entree fills you up so who needs all that salad? My favorite dish is the house specialty chicken spedini - i was able to make 3 meals out of it, as it also comes with salad and a side of pasta, very filling. my husband loves the lasagna but this last time he ordered the tortellini donatella which has a slightly spicy salsiccia that he really enjoys. we made 3 meals of that dish also.
I would agree, however, that the service is slow. I guess we are getting used to it by now as it seems to be this way each time we go there to eat. we had to ask for bread three times, it came as we were finishing the meal. so it was wrapped up and came home with our leftovers. on the 2 occasions we were there for a birthday and anniversary we were given one free dessert to split - delicious tiramisu!
All in all, i still enjoy to eat here. i find it a laid back relaxing atmosphere, which may explain the slow service. but we love the food and will continue to come here to eat! as another reviewer said, the singer is neat for a while then becomes a little creepy and annoying - but still FUN!
A gem of an Italian restaurant. Service and food are the two items that makes your visit enjoyable or a disaster, fortunately both were great at Mama's. This was my introduction to toasted ravioli, and now I am spoiled. All the toasted ravioli's are made by hand and fillings you can see and taste. The person I was with was used to toasted ravioli's made by machines and very little filling. The marinara sauce was a little too bland for my taste but still tasty. I ordered the sausage and peppers sandwich, with cheese. Had additional marinara sauce and added hot peppers to taste to the sandwich, yum! Mama's salad came with the sandwich and used balsamic vinegar and oil, nice.
Again, the service and food were excellent. When I come back to St. Louis, I will be going back to Mama's.
Ate there again last night after some time away, and it's still just as good as I remember it. Comfortable and cozy with friendly service and great food; I don't think you could go wrong with anything on their menu. Without a doubt, one of my favorite restaurants. I just wish they were closer to me, so I could eat there more often!
Great food again and great service, so it wasn't a fluke!
The host was singing with mic' in hand, as he seated us. He was pretty funny. It was a pleasant night. He really got into it. :) He gave all the woman flowers when they walked in the door. It was a very nice touch.
*****BUT be warned on those really hot days their air conditioning can not keep their space cool in the slightest. It was just slightly warm when we got there but when the place started to fill up it got VERY VERY HOT! Sweat was dripping off us when we left there. I swear it was cooler outside. It started becoming the joke that I couldn't take them to a place where it wasn't slightly cooler then a sauna. lol. *sigh*
It was still a wonderful evening and it is still one of my favorites.
My cousins and I had dinner here on a Tuesday night. We all enjoyed our meal immensely. I had the Tortellini Donatella and it was amazing. They had vegetarian options, and were welcoming to kids.
I went here for lunch not too long ago and I can't wait to go back. The small atmosphere makes for an italian experience just like grandma used to have at her house back in the day. It's not glamorous, but it's authentic, and for a small Italian restaurant, that's all you can expect and appreciate.
The bread is pretty basic but the garlic sauce and parmesan cheese they throw on the table make for a great little appetizer. I can honestly say everything on the menu looked great. I went light and safe with the beef ravioli covered in provel and baked in the oven. I would definitely recommend it, but would expand my pallet on the next visit.
While there are plenty of choices for italian on the Hill, I would definitely recommend you check out Mama Campisi's for great italian atmosphere and food.
This is my favorite place for St. Louis (The Hill) style Italian food. I was visiting town and received outstanding service here, and have made a point to return any time I'm in town. I love the pizza here, and particularly with their salsiccia as a topping (usually I don't like sausage pizza, but this is unbelievably good). The toasted ravioli was invented here, and is delicious. Places like this are going away in America, and it's a shame. Great food, great service, historic neighborhood with a nice community feel.
I know a lot of people drive by on the highway just passing through St Louis. My advice is to get off I-44 at Kingshighway, drive to the Hill, grab a delicious meal here, stroll down to a bakery nearby for an Italian pastry, and experience the neighborhood. It's a hidden gem and its worth taking a little break from the monotony of interstate to see it.
A note for those new to STL style pizza. It has a very thin cracker crust and very gooey cheese called provel. It's not gonna be like your typical pizza. I consider myself a bit of a pizza expert, and I can tell you the pizza in St. Louis should be the third American pizza style that every chain tries to emulate. I would love to see places advertising St. Louis style pizza next to Chicago deep dish and NY style. It is truly underrated. Think of it as the musician that isn't famous enough relative to his talent, and be glad someone turned you on to him.
I am scratching my head trying to figure out how this restaurant has a three star rating?? I walked in and was greeted warmly, I ponied up to the bar and things only got better from there. Instead of ordering straight from the menu I talk to the barhop and told him what I wanted, great service. First out was the house bread and olive oil, excellent. Then up was the salad, sorry Andrew K., mine was perfect. I had to resist eating the whole salad to save room for my meal. I ordered the fried eggplant and spinach as a side dish. The spinach was really good, one bite had me dreaming about Rome again. The eggplant wasn't my favorite, most likely the eggplant wasn't in its prime. The sauce and broiled mozzarella were good, but, with the eggplant I'll give it a four star rating.
Just when I didn't think I could eat anything else he mentioned Tiramisu.... hmmm, I really have a weakness for Tiramisu. I don't usually like to order it because I'm really particular about how I like it made. Glad to say it was very very good. I would have licked the plate but there were some other folks at the bar by then and it would have been weird.
There are so many great places to eat on the Hill sometimes its hard to decide where to go. I would definitely come back again, I felt welcomed and that means a lot to me. It's very cozy and really felt like home.
I'd come back just for the Tiramisu!
Went here for my boyfriends graduation. The owners came out and greeted us , even made us Italian nachos that were not even on the menu and they were great ! I had a chicken Parmesan dish , and my boyfriend had the veil , which were both also great ! The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. Cannot wait to go back !
I loved this place. We had an excellent Italian dinner here. The service was very good and the food was even better.
We were early for dinner and the manager greeted us at the door. I was looking for Lasagna and they had some of the best I have ever had. We had the Toasted Ravioli appetizer and it was excellent.
Great place! I went with my parents got the sampler appetizer, amazing. We all ordered sangria, they too were good. I ordered veal and parents had chicken. Only complaint was the waiter forgot my salad. He made up for it by free dessert! We went again two weeks later, ordered a spicy sausage pasta. Amazing I will be back!
I loved this place. Too often we roll to the hill ( and roll home with our bellies full), and we head to Rigazzi's. Now, I have another Hill restaurant I would highly recommend. I loved the red sauce. That is the vital component of an Italian restaurant for me. I ordered an eggplant Parmesan meal, but not the appetizer one. It had a fancier name, Melanzana, but it was basically eggplant parm: it was delicious. That is one of my favorite Italian foods, so I know good eggplant parm.
The other two people I was with had Tilapia Bianco. I hate fish and was thrilled it did not have that fishy smell. Still, they both gave it high marks. If you are into presentation, it was beautiful looking!
We began with the bruschetta, and we all liked it I did wish there were six pieces rather than five. Someone had to say, "No, you take it".
All our entrees came with a salad. now, this was a great salad. So often the salad that comes with a meal is sadly lacking in portion and in excitement. This was a rather substantial salad. Get the House dressing; you will not be disappointed.
Our waiter was entertaining. We asked quite a few questions, and he especially told us about their eating challenge, which is an amazing amount of spaghetti with a meatball the size of a baby's head. thus far, five people have done this, one in 21 minutes. Eat it all...it is free It probably would not be interesting enough for Man Vs. Food, but I know I could not make a dent in it.
The only average marks I would give this restaurant is atmosphere. There are various rooms. It felt as if I were eating in someone's house. It was fine with me, but some foodies might not be thrilled.
I went here with my wife this past weekend. This restaurant is small, quaint place, with very good food. My wife and I split the toasted ravioli for an appetizer. Both Mama's and Charlie Gitto's claim to have invented the toasted ravioli, and it's equally good at both places. I ordered the chicken parm for dinner. It comes with a small dinner salad and a side of pasta. All of it was very good. My wife ordered a chicken dish as well, but the name of it escapes me. She enjoyed her meal as well. We didn't have enough room for dessert. Service was very good throughout the meal. All in all, Mama's is an excellent an inexpensive choice for dinner on the hill.
I went with some friends on a weekday afternoon. One of my friend's wanted to try the toasted ravioli at Mama Toscano's (after seeing it featured on a Food Network show), but the rest of us wanted a sit-down restaurant. We asked the counter guy at Mama Toscano's if an area restaurant served their original ravioli's and it turns out that Mama's on the Hill did, so away we went. It was one block down, so an easy venture.
A few of the tables were filled when we showed up, and our waiter was very nice and attentive throughout our whole meal. Inside, the restaurant is homely; I think it even features family pictures on the wall. So it's not a super classy place, but definitely comfortable and clean.
We tried the toasted ravioli, which was tasty. I shared the Baked Lasagna and Tortellini Donatella with a friend. I liked both very much (but discovered that, personally, I'm not a fan of sun dried tomatoes which comes with the tortellini dish). The lasagna's red sauce was delicious...highly recommend this dish.
Also delicious was the house salad. It is served with a house Italian vinaigrette dressing which is sweet and makes the salad taste like a really good cole slaw. One of my friends wanted ranch dressing instead but our waiter encouraged her to get the house dressing because of it's "perfectly complimenting favors." She stuck with ranch and regretted it! I love this house salad!
At the start of the meal, the waiter brought us bread, oil and Parmesan cheese. The oil and cheese was savory, but the bread wasn't very good.
I shared a tiramisu for dessert. It's good, but they top it with Hershey's syrup. I'm not going to hate chocolate, but, I wish they didn't add that to the recipe. Our waiter highly recommended the Lemoncello dessert, but we couldn't try it because they were out. He also encouraged us to order cannolis from Vitali's bakery (they're better than the cannolis they order from a different bakery, I guess).
Finally, consider going during lunch so you can order off their cheaper lunch menu. The portions are smaller, but still pretty large. I can't imagine how big the dinner portions are!
SIMPLY THE BEST! From the time we were greater at the front door, until we left Staff was exceptional kind, very informative about food and history of "the hill". My family is Italian so needless to say I'm VERY picky! I can assure you the food here is the real deal, we had the homemade Toasted Ravioli (delicious) salad with their balsamic dressing WOW!! I had the chicken spedini tender and full of flavor, wife had the lasagna sorry mom but you have a lil competition! We were there on a Saturday so the pastry chef had his specialty desserts we shared the tiramisu.. Truly authentic. The restaurants decor and feel made me feel right at home.. We were so impressed we signed up for the wine dinner and are having them cater my parents 50th anniversary for 200 people. VERY EXCITED!!! Thank you Mamas.
Mama's is the place to be. I find this corner restaurant filled with family warmth and amazing food at a reasonable price. The t-rav are our favorite, they are a must to order. The portions are very generous, the fresh warm bread with the infused oil, fresh sides, and amazing service seals the deal for me on this family friendly restaurant.
Went here honestly not expecting a whole lot, but I was pleasantly surprised. They give you bread with garlic olive oil and parmesean which was awesome, and the house salad with their sweet house dressing was really big and tasty.
Can't remember the name of the dish I had but it was some sort of stuffed chicken. The chicken was cooked very well but it was partly stuffed with provel (should have read the menu more carefully!) and not being a native st louisian I was a little turned off. Overall the chicken was delicious, however, and the side pasta with red sauce was great though - their sauce is some of the best I've had.
FABULOUS staff, food and atmosphere! Truly a place you can take a large family and be enjoyed and appreciated. Cannelloni, toasted ravioli and tortellini among our FAVORITES!
I am not an expert of the hill but a close friend recommended Mama's. It was a beautiful Friday evening, nice breeze so we decided to eat out side. I don't believe we were seated before a waiter was asking us what we wanted to drink. Water with ice made it to our table. Who does that anymore? I was going to order the monster Meatball with Spaghetti I was talked out it. If you can finish this dish there you get the meal free and a teeshirt (lol).
I order the triple pasta plate. Trip well worth it. We ordered toasted ravioli' and their Italian nacho's both were excellent. The toasted ravioli' was the best I have ever eaten, I've eaten a lot of toasted ravioli'. Back to the triple pasta plate. After all the bread, appitzers I barely scratch the pasta plate. I took it to go.
The next day I pulled out the left overs for another meal. Placed it on the plate and sprinkeled a little water over the plate and stuck it into the micro-wave. OMG!!! That was the best leftovers I have ever eaten. SERIOUSLY.
I'm going back for that Meatball plate and maybe a tee-shirt.
Loved it! Toasted ravioli, spaghetti, lasagna, tiramisu all graced our table. Was traveling with a true Italian and he agreed it was the best meal we had experienced in a week. Friendly staff, good service and great food!
Pretty great place. Great food, good ambience, great service. Only thing I could say is that some of the tables are a bit cramped.
Wife and I ate here for our anniversary. The waiter was super friendly and helpful. The toasted ravioli was very good. We should have ordered more. The lasagna was very good as well. I didn't care for the chicken spiedini but that had more to do with my taste than the preparation. The salad was great. Maybe a little too sweet. The waiter warned us that the dressing made the lettuce look brown. Glad he did or I would have thought the lettuce had turned. For dessert we had tiramisu. It was very good. Didn't know that restaurant impossible had just been there last fall. I'd go back if I'm in the area again.
Guy was a great server. The toasted ravs are like no other. The seafood stuffed mushroom appetizer is also delicious. The dipping oil for the bread has a little kick, yummy. The bathrooms are family friendly but it's not inundated with yipey kids;-)))
Great place to eat and reasonably priced. If you're not from St. Louis, try the fried raviolis for an appetizer = a local 'must try'. The carbonara (?) was delicious - huge serving. Seafood ravioli was also a hit. The salad was not so good, but the rest of the dinner made up for it. Great service, friendly staff...we'd go back!
My friend and I were attending the Lantern festival at the Botanical Gardens so we looked up Italian restaurants in The Hill neighborhood. Lots of places in the area were closed on Sundays, but Mamas was open and their menu looked good. There are tons of Italian restaurants in Philly, and I am used to really good authentic Italian cooking. I will admit I was skeptical...this was Missouri after all.
I loved it! They serve really tasty garlic and herb infused olive oil with bread. I had the house salad with house balsamic and linguine and mussels and clams. Both sauces were so good I kind of wanted to lick my plate with my finger to sop up the remaining salad dressing and garlicy butter sauce.
We also shared the appetizer combo plate...it was really nothing to rave about but not so bad that it tainted my view of the restaurant. I don't get why toasted ravioli is popular. Tasted kind like a fried Chef Boyardee ravioli with minced up crappy beef. I guess you have to be a local to get the appeal of these things.
One complaint - there was a really really drunk older gentlemen at the bar while we waited for our table. We were polite to him at first, but he just wouldnt let up for seriously...25 or 30 minutes. He kept staring at my friends boobs, in a rude OBVIOUS way. Hanging all over her and pawing her up. I told him that if he touched me I would flip out and probably punch him in his face so I was spared the groping (East Coast people hate everyone...my Midwestern friend was much more tolerant). We finally got away and he then came over to our table twice! Called me insensitive when he spit on my arm and I tried to make a joke about it! The staff was apologetic...but I really think they could have comped part of our bill or some drinks for the annoyance. He was eventually escorted out...
The food was truly, and genuinely superb. The toasted ravioli on the appetizer menu is the best i've ever had. The lasagna dishes are above mediocre and definitely well portioned. Also ,be wary...when their menu mentions that something is "spicy", it REALLY is spicy. Not just a kick...but a punch! Good and flavorful...but be aware that you may not be able to enjoy your meal completely unless you've coated your tongue with wax first.
Their meat lovers pizza....is some of the best of ever had. Something about the sauce and its slight sweetness...I WILL be craving some more just like it soon I am sure.
The waiter was helpful, but fairly pushy and irritating. I later found he was from our great city of Chicago- and I totally forgave him after that since that attitude is to be expected. :)
The menu is on the slightly pricey side, but their pasta and chicken dishes are pretty reasonable for this sort of establishment.
This establishment is pretty damn good when it comes to a block full of repetitive italian restaurants in the italian neighborhood (for tourists eyes only...), serving italian food, with italian themes....etc etc.
I know this theme is well deserved for the 'hood, but something about all the restuarants stricking SUCH similarities is almost discomforting. I wanted something special, more intimate and casual- but still delicious. So I tried Mama's, and although the ideas were still stale as all the others, Mama's at least does it better.
The food here is some the best Italian food I have had in a long time. We started out by having toasted fried ravioli that was absolutely perfect, but be careful as they are brought out super hot and you can burn yourself if your not careful. For my meal I had the spaghetti and meatballs their sauce is some of the best I've ever had. I had a very pleasant meal and the service is amazing. I recommend you visit Mamas on the Hill. If your man enough try their challenge!
This place will always be special to me. My mom's family is originally from St Louis, more speciffically "The Hill" So when I was living in Chicago, I would drive to St Louis and visit my extended family. 99.9% of the time when we would go out to dinner, we would go to Mama's. Toasted Ravioli is a must have when eating here. They make the ravioli by hand with a meat filling. They are heavenly. The rest of the food is very good quality. Newbies should probably Google "Provel Cheese" before they visit, but it's not bad at all.(I'm a New Yorlk/New Jersey Mozzarella snob, and I enjoy the Provel)
I love the service here and I will ALWAYS have a soft spot for this place
Came on Wed. Evening straight from the airport, had Mike as a waiter and he was fabulous with his personality and service, he found me a hard apple cider after I declined all the beers as too regular, we ordered the small mama's combo for an appetizer and had lots of yummy food to start with, the fried ravioli was delicious and the Calimari was really good, lots of it and we didn't finish it, the stuffed mushrooms were good also. The dinners were hot and met our anxious to enjoy expectations, tortellini ala papa, penne pasta ala vodka, and ripieno.
We had dinner there on Saturday. We got off to a rocky start as they had run out of menus and struggled to get us seated. Once that was resolved we got our order placed. Lauren had their Sangria. That was really good.
The ravioli lived up to the other reviewers comments. We had five different pasta dishes. Everyone raved about their choices. I personally had the carbonara. The menu described the sauce as "spectacular garlic creme sauce" and it definitely lived up to that. My daughter was kind enough tho share her seafood ravioli; also very tasty as was the pasta con broccoli. My 12 year old was unable to finish the "Hill of Spaghetti"; he ordered it with two meatballs. My mother-in-law had the pollo capellini, angel hair pasta with shaved chicken and a pesto cream creme sauce; she wouldn't share.
Because of the rough start our waiter was kind enough to offer dessert. We had lemon cake, cheesecake, and tiramisu. All of them were great but the lemon cake by far was the favorite at the table.
All in all, this was a great experience and we will be back
Great food, good wine, and a friendly server made our experience at Mama's great! My boyfriend and I have ate here in previous years and had some good food, so we wondered if the restaurant's adventure with Restaurant Impossible had changed it for better or worse. The toasted ravioli are still fantastic, and the sauces on the dishes are still Mama's great stuff. We agreed with the server that the decor wasn't right for the hill, but the food and friendliness more than make up for it.
Price wise? I've read many reviews on here that say its expensive... It's original Italian food that is the same price as Olive Garden and ten times better. If you're cheap, don't eat out. Trust me, I say that on behalf of all servers.
I have been here several times, yet I have never taken the time to pen a review. My absolute favorite thing on the menu at Mama's, and since I have discovered it, I may never try anything else. The lasagna is awesome! Get the lasagna! Before I go on too much about the lasagna, I should tell you that the soft spot I have for it, has much to do with the fact that it is the closest rendition of my own mothers lasagna that I have found anywhere. Full disclosure, my mother is not Italian. I don't know if that means anything. But there it is. Also you can't forget the basket of wonderfully soft bread served with seasoned olive oil.
Second, I have a habit of nearly always trying toasted ravioli anywhere I can find that serves them. Since they are a local thing, and lot's of people stake claims for inventing them. I think Mama's argument in that case is pretty convincing. For an appetizer as over hyped as the T-Rav, Mama's serves a pretty good one. It's not a crusty previously frozen piece of garbage you get at some places.
Third thing about Mama's. You kind of get the feeling dining here that you are having dinner in someones home. The service staff if quick and efficient, but don't expect them to stand on ceremony for you. They know what they're doing, and you're in their house. Just sit down, mind your manners, and pass the bread please!
Everything was excellent. Went on a Sunday night and our typical places to visit in the Hill were closed. Glad we tried here. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff.
Been at least four times for dinner. The first time entered, and there's a guy singing in the dining room. Holy Cow!! How fun!! It was like a Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin throwback!! And there's a little bar by the back stairs. Quite cozy and homey!
The bread's fabulous. Service is perfect.
The house salad is lovely: $4.50 (small) for mixed greens, roasted red peppers, green onions, provel, and parmesan cheese tossed in house-made balsamic Italian dressing.
Different dining partners and I have gotten and thoroughly enjoyed:
Chicken Parmesan: $14.25, boneless chicken breast lightly breaded, sauted, then topped with provel cheese and marinara sauce and baked. My youngest (he's 19), who judges all by their chicken parmesan declares this the best he's ever had -- with leftovers (who knew?).
Bistecca di Mudega: $18.45, 12-oz. strip steak rolled in seasoned breadcrumbs, charbroiled and topped with proscuitto, mushrooms and garlic wine sauce. Just a little bit of heaven.
Chicken Marsala: $14.25, sauted chicken medallions, shallots and mushrooms in a sweet marsala wine sauce.
Chicken Spedini: $15.75, boneless chicken breast breaded and stuffed with proscuitto, mushrooms, roma tomatoes, green onion and provel. Rolled, pan roasted and served with a white wine lemon butter sauce.
Seafood Ravioli: $13.95, ravioli stuffed with lobster, scallops and shrimp with a blend of marinara and parmesan cream sauces, then sprinkled with baby shrimp.
Tortellini ala Pappa: $12.95, meat-filled tortellini, peas and proscuitto in a garlic parmesan cream sauce.
And always, leftovers.
Had the ravioli and lasagna. . I I like the sweetness of the red sauce. Lasagna layers and Italian sausage were amazing in it.
We went there craving Italian food (or at least I was), and did not leave disappointed nor hungry!
A quick run down:
*LOVED the calamari. Really light, and they are served with peppercinis. The menu says you are getting a generous portion ... and the menu doesn't lie. We said next time we are getting this alone, with salad and wine.
* The chianti ... I am a fan. Delicious.
* I ordered the manicotti. It was just as good, as it was rich. ByT no means does one person have any business eating the whole plate. A lot of food.
* My boyfriend ordered the Pollo Spedini, which was also a Warren Buffet generous portion. He definitely enjoyed it however.
* We both went home with an abundance of left overs. Solid place to go and share food.
* We were looking for something causal and easy, and while this was pretty casual, the bill was still $80 which I thought was pretty high for basic Italian.
* The name fits the ambiance ... its a "ma and pa" type restaurant. Cute, laid back, and pretty casual.
* The bathrooms were clean and that is important to me! Kid friendly, and they had an old school diaper changing station which mother's would appreciate.
* Service was good .. they definitely check in and clear plates, but not to a point where it is annoying and they don't leave you alone. Really good balance!
* One of the things I love most about Italian food, is the delicious bread you are typically served before your meal. I have definitely had better. It tasted like it was out and re-heated a couple of times, but the delicious oil concoction on the table made it taste a lot better.
I think that covers it! It was almost a 3 A-OK star from me, but we did agree we'd go back, so therefore, I am giving it a 4! Go with an appetite and Mangia!
We are visiting family in St. Louis, from California. My entire life I have heard how wonderful the restaurants on the hill are. Last night I found out for myself. We walked in and were welcomed my Mike. Our waiter Tony was great. Now the food was even better. We had some more family members Join us when we we just about done with our meal. Tony did not skip a beat. However, they do not have an extensive wine list.
Molto Buona!! We opened the door, and were instantly swept to our table by one of three servers named Tony singing along to Ol' Blue Eyes Frank Sinatra. The smell was hypnotic! The aroma of fresh baked bread & sauce lingering in the air. Bottles of wine & parmesean shakers on the table with white table clothes. I thought for sure I would look to the corner and catch a glimpse of Lady & the Tramp slurping up a strand of spaghetti. Our server Tony had us waters and bread baskets with real butter with in minutes. This is how Italian should be, a game almost. To see if you can sample everything you order before getting full. We ordered the Antipasto (8.25) with 3 meats & Cheese with roasted peppers, olives & pepperconcinis. The appitizer featured Prosciutto, salami & ham paired with fresh mozzarella, fontina & I believe pecorino. We also ordered the calamari (8.95) which may have been a mistake, because the size of the appetizers where ridiculously large for the price. The calamari (tentacles and all) were lightly breaded, fried & tossed with mild pepper rings. The calamari was served with the fried batter crumbs, weather served intentionally or not I don't know, but down the hatch with the tomato dipping sauce they went. You could see some faces at the table starting to get full already, but this is not my first time eating Italian. I knew we still had a couple rounds to go and pushed that feeling to the back of my mind. Up next was a simple house salad served with a shredded mozzarella and a simply awesome sweet balsamic vinaigrette, one of the best dressings I had this road trip. It was now time to sample the pasta, the chef's choice was shells tossed with marinara sauce and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. The sauce was sweet and a tad acidic. I would probably guess being it was late that maybe the sauce reduced in the pot to long, good none the less. Finally, the entree. Veal Parmigianino (18.95). 3 pieces of veal scallopini lighted bread and pan fried served with the house marinara and smothered in melted mozzarella cheese. The veal could have been jaccarded a little more but was great. I had every intention of ordering some tiramisu or maybe a cannoli but seriously we could not eat another bite. The atmosphere was great! At one point there was conversations going with 3 different tables discussing where they were from and how good of a time every body was having in St. Louis. The Hill was a great place to find some spots to eat & I'm really glad we found Mama's, I would also like to thank Patt C for suggesting Mama's, it's a great little mom & pops Italian restaurant.
Food, atmosphere, and service are all excellent. Definitely a place on The Hill that deserves consideration if you're looking for a good place to eat. The manicotti is fantastic and every Sunday they have a guy who learned to cook dessert from a pastry shop in Italy! Very nice touch. I also recommend the Banana Cheesecake for dessert!
We come to Mama's every couple months. We love the food here, and you always have leftovers. They are very reasonably priced for the amount of food that you get. Our most recent visit, I ordered the chicken parmesan served with a side of pasta and a side salad. The chicken parm was amazing...the perfect ratio of breading to chicken, and somehow, even though it was smothered in their amazing marinara sauce (the more sauce the better!), the breading was still nice and crispy. I ordered the pasta with red and white sauce mixed...very good! I really enjoy the salad dressing here and all the nice cheese on the salad. It is a really big portion of salad too. My boyfriend ordered the pollo spedini. It is his favorite stuffed chicken in all of St. Louis.
If nothing else, you will not leave here hungry. The plates are very large and very tasty. We had the calamari, and I can not think of a better calamari I have ever had.
Definitely recommend reading here.
We love this place. We've been there several times when visiting our daughter at Wash U. Very friendly atmosphere and great food. One time the owner sat down with us just to chat about wines and what we thought of his place. We'll go back whenever we're in the mood for Italian...and no waiting!!
Love the spaghetti.
This place is like walking into a family gathering. Your uncles are serving the food and little cousins busing the tables. There are going to be some kids crying. And there is always something funny to point at. In the end, it will be a good experience and some great tasting food. My wife loves the lasagna and it is ALWAYS on the menu. If you've been around the Hill, most places offer lasagna once a week on specific days. I enjoyed the spaghetti and love the rich, dark tomatoes in the marinara. The meatballs and sausage combo is heaven.
Saw this restaurant on the food network getting a revamp so we decided to try it out. Food was good and portion size wasn't bad.
The food was a bit pricey but for the hill that's not uncommon but they are still below what other places are charging. Would I go back again the answer is yes. But only on lunch specials.
I like the atmosphere. The server was really nice. I ordered a pasta that had chicken with provel, bacon and mushrooms it wasn't good so I ordered the shrimp pasta and it was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
Manicotti was delicious! Our waitress was nice and attentive. Good family experience.
One of the best Italian restaurants I've ever been too. Very authentic right down to the Italian waiters. A very nice place I can not wait to return!
Lunch here today. The lasagna was fantastic & spaghetti and meatballs amazing! What I enjoyed most was the salad--- not sure what they did to it but it was amazing! We will for sure visit here again! My hubby loved the bread dipping oil too!
We came here for a family gathering. My mom is of Asian decent and we really wanted her to try out the best toasted raviolis so of course we had to take her to Mamas. She LOVED it! The portions are generous and the pasta con broccoli is my staple
I had no complaints. When my boyfriend & I come to St. Louis we always make sure to stop for Italian somewhere in the hill district. I'm Italian & it's the cutest little area. Last restaurant we tried was "Zia's" I definitely was not a fan of that one. So we decided to try a different place.
The atmosphere of mamas was great. Service was friendly. Great bread with our small salads. The fried ravioli was the BEST I've ever had! But I guess it should be because it was where it originated. This is a must have!
Our main dish was the pesto tortellini.. It was very tastey but couldn't eat much because we were already pretty full from the small appitizers before hand.
No complaints!
Such great Italian food! They know how to keep it simple and delicious, no extra frills but never skimping on the essentials to good dish. The interior was beautiful, the servers were super friendly and wonderful to talk to.
They also have the great Spaghetti Challenge, which you should definitely try if you're up for it: Finish 4 lb of spaghetti and 2 lb of meatball, and you earn yourself lifetime fame and Mama Campisi's will put the $25 meal on the house. Lots of fun and support from the waiters and all the other restaurant-goers, it was a great night.
This was a great meal! My noodles in the rabbit bolognese were so perfectly cooked, just a hair past al dente, I actually thought it might be fresh! I had to ask, and was told it wasn't but it was so well prepared and had that good chew without being undercooked or overcooked. They definitely hit the sweet spot. My wife had the tortellini in cream sauce and this was a hit too! I don't care for most cream sauces, I hate alfredo sauce. But this was more of a pure cream with LOTS of garlic and just a little parmesan that made it perfect! It was a touch salty to me but with parmesan and prosciutto that's to be expected lol. Very dog friendly with no problems having our pets on the sidewalk with us and a huge bowl of water for them. They both are beggars and I had to share some of my rabbit as a treat, lol.
Stopped by because we wanted an afternoon drink outside on a Sunday and saw some ladies with wine when we drove by. Had a lovely time, they just had three outdoor tables but it was beautiful out and we had a lovely time. $25 bottle of wine, and some toasted ravioli and stuffed artichoke spinach bread. Good service, delicious hot and fresh food. Would like to go back for a meal sometime.
I don't eat much Italian so this was one of my first visits to the hill. I got Alfredo, husband-lasagna, father-manicotti, mother-seafood pasta. ALL of us enjoyed our dishes, I was really impressed with the lasagna. Not to mention the pasta portions were huge. My parents claimed the clam stuffed mushrooms appetizer were a little on the rich side, you can't eat many of them. This wasn't my first choice, but this is one of the few places on The Hill that is open on Sunday. So glad we went.
My boyfriend and I were in town and we had a recommendation from a friend to stop in and try mamas. This place was hands down the most perfect place to stop for dinner. The service was amazing, and our food even better! My boyfriend got a signature chicken dish and I got pasta. Both were outstanding. The place it's self is cutely decorated and had a nice family vibe. We most likely will stop in again before we go back home! :)
One thing I really like about St. Louis is The Hill, the old Italian-American section of the city and a bastion of excellent family-run Italian restaurants. Mama Campisi's bills itself as the "Home of the Toasted Ravioli." And, this item is good but I was much more impressed by its Provel Sticks. Much like Mozzarella Sticks, deep-fried lengths of cheese just oozed with great Provel Cheese, a mixture of Provolone, Swiss, and Cheddar Cheese that is reportedly only made in the St. Louis area. Homemade Minestrone Soup with a spicy tomato-based broth was hearty and very good but in my opinion clogged with too many vegetables and too much pasta. It was filled with Garbanzo Beans, Kidney Beans, carrots, and tomato. On the other hand, a side House Salad was excellent and rendered juicy by a homemade Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing. It tasted like a chopped salad with chopped tomato bits but without any meat.
A side of Penne Alfredo was excellent but, although the Marinara Sauce was mild and included a few onions, the meatballs in a "Hill" of Spaghetti & Meatballs were very spicy, Some diners will enjoy this extra kick; others likely will not. Unfortunately, it took three tries for the kitchen to serve Diane a Veal Parm with Alfredo Sauce and no red sauce. But when it finally came as ordered the dish was very tasty. And, the manager graciously took this item off the bill. Service was very friendly, and the ambiance pleasantly rustic.
A 4-1/2-star experience overall!
Went here for my Grandmother's 84th birthday. It was the best experience we have had on the hill. Every staff member was attentive and friendly. When we asked for recomendations I felt like they were real recomendations and not just the most expensive item on the menu.
The inside of it was very well decorated very light and open. The only down fall is there is no wheel chair access.
I will be returning most defiantly!
I feel like I don't need to write a review because the rest are so positive!
I've been 4 or 5 times. The service can be sort of slow, but always so friendly and helpful. The food is always good. I love their coffee, Italian restaurants always brew the best coffee. The last time I went, I shared a meal with my mother and kid sister, the portions are big enough that we didn't need any more. It isn't a fancy place, but very cozy and perfect for a day lunch or casual dinner with family or friends. I do wish the had more dessert. There was a looped photograph of a lovely looking lemon cake on one of the TVs that we had wanted to order, but all they had was teramisu, spumoni, and plain cheesecake. Oh well, the teramisu was good, too!
I had the meat ravioli with the suggested wine on the menu. Perfect! The spumoni ice cream was great too.
What a fun place! St. Louis friends took me here for an area favorite. Seafood ravioli was wonderful. Mike the waiter made our night.
Mama's is always the best! We have been here 3 times now and every visit is both unique and equally delicious.
My favorite thing on the menu is the Tilapia Elizabeth. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!
Ate here for lunch on a recommendation from a friend. Like other have stated, it has a dining in a house feel to it. Owner was friendly, the owners daughter not so much.
Ordered the toasted ravioli. Was outstanding. They have the type of red sauce with it that we all wish we could make at home.
Had the chicken spedini. Outstanding flavor, chicken was cooked perfect. Served on a bed of linguini. Really could be split amongst two people. Cost efficient for lunch. Had no chance of getting through the whole entree however. People next to us had pizza and they said it was outstanding.
Overall good experience. Would go back for sure.
I met two of my brothers and their wives up here on Friday. We originally tried Cunetto's but we weren't down with over an hour wait at 6:30 (I knew not to try to get to Cunetto's later than 5PM on a weekend if you don't want to wait. That place is sure popular.)
We went down the street to Mama's on the Hill (apparently it's not called Mama Campisi's anymore). None of us had been before. The menu is pretty typical Hill selections. We were all happy with what we chose. The toasted raviolis are very good (they claim to be the first to come up with the idea in St. Louis).
I would say that this is more of a 3 or 3.5 star place but we had an excellent waiter in Tommy Lee. He was very helpful, friendly, funny, and welcoming. He is excellent at his job. He apparently works most Friday and Saturday nights. Tommy Lee bumps Mama's up to 4 stars. Any restaurant would be lucky to have him working for them.
I moved back to the HILL from New York. Mama's has a quality of food and Italian familiarity felt good from the minute I walked in. The menu isn't too big but covers whatever you crave to Mangia. Make a reservation on a weekend. Seasoned service staff makes it an experience! Some of their waiters have served John Lennon and Frank Sinatra. They were willing to customize my needs and wishes. The buss staff, very attentive. Run out of water, there....run out of bread, there!
I've ordered in and take out. Even a large order to serve at home was authentic and fresh! I have not been disappointed. The wines are nice, cap off with an espresso and slice of cheesecake made by the hands an in-house pastry chef.
I continue to go back when I know there is nowhere else that will satisfy like Mama's!
Outstanding service and a warm family friendly spot.
Met the owners daughter and made me feel as part of the family.
The antipasto plate and homemade house balsamic dressing was worth stopping for..
A must stop on your way through St Louis.
One of the vest on the hill.
Great family friendly Italian restaurant in The Hill. Mama's fried ravioli was so good our table went through three orders. The house side salad was one of hbd best I've had, in fact our server Nate sent home with a bottle of Mama's homemade dressing. The antipasto was very good mix of meats, cheeses, & vegetables and was large info for four adults to share. My favorite entree was the pollo saltimbocca, the Pam seared chicken melts in your mouth. The kids ordered spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs alone would be review worthy. Great balance of seasons and meat , complimented perfectly by the rich marinara. This is a place worth visiting, but go hungry and with friends.
Amazing service and amazing food!! We ended up here because there is very little open on Sundays on the hill. We were not disappointed! The waiter was fun and informative. We started with the "boda boom bada" bing cherry lime martini, strawberry cream soda, and toasted ravioli. For our meal we had lasagna, cannelloni, and penne pasta ala vodka. All were wonderful!
Holy Batman! This is some really good food! Like really really good food! In our party we had some lasagna, Seafood linguine and beef ravioli. We could have licked our plates clean!!! The service was really great as well! They kept our drinks full and checked on us regularly. Food came out quick and hot! Without a doubt I would recommend Mama's On The Hill! The place is quaint, clean and overall appeasing! Thank you for a wonderful dining experience!
Wow, the four of us went to Mama's on the Hill and the food was amazing! The bartender was friendly and the server was just ok. We all very much enjoyed the food. I would totally go back if I came to Missouri again.
Oh my....the emotions come flooding in! Dago Hill we called it growing up. One of the many places I miss of living in "the lou". So to be be able to dine with familia in one out favorite places was 5 stars itself and then add some amazing Italian food. The pics are self explanatory and the service was superb. Hands down Chicken Modiga was amazing!! Loved our waiter Mike! Lovely voice by the way.....we listened to you croon the whole way home!!!!! My heart belongs to you Mama! Or as we say in the south "momma"!
Great food! Had the seafood ravioli. The other person in my party had the eggplant Parmesan and that was good as well. The homemade Italian dressing was awesome- we even bought a few bottles to bring home!
Possibly the best chicken fettucine alfredo I have had.
Mama's is one of my "go to" restaurants. The food is always consistently good, the atmosphere is great, and the service is spot on. They are always friendly and treat you like family.
All in all a great Italian place with a great atmosphere! We went on Sunday which they open at 11 which was nice! It was not crowded and we got a nice table in the back room. The waiter was nice and talked to us and told us the specials.
They said this was the place where toasted Ravs were invented but I think several other places in STL on the hill say the same thing.
Food here is enormous and you get a lot of it. The salad that cake with the meal was uneventful. I got the lasagna which was amazing! It was big and meaty and covered in cheese and so so good!!! I got to taste some of the other dishes like the meatballs which tasted great and were huge. I also tasted the pizza which was okay but it was traditional STL paper thin.
We had my nephew with special needs with us and the waiter kept trying to talk with him which was nice but he could care less and not understand what was being said.
I like this place cause they are always open and you get good Italian food!
After being turned away from Zia's after waiting 30 minutes because their "manager" decided he didn't want to serve our party... we went to Mama's.
It was an amazing decision. We walked right in and sat right down! (Should have came here first). "Magic Mike" was our server, and he was quite the entertainer. He gave us incredible information and suggestions for the menu as we were all newbies! We had waters before he was even finished taking our drink orders (great assistants!) He suggested their house made Toasted Raviolis, which we ordered, and devoured. They were amazing! Our server also continuously checked on us, and kept our rambunctious 8 year old entertained! He showed her magic tricks, and provided her with a coloring book and crayons! We all had different meals, and everyone was happy with their meal! Our server even gave our little girl a slice of cheesecake for her birthday. It was an amazing experience. KUDOS to Mama's and their staff. Customer service went above and beyond and we couldn't be happier. Will definitely be back!
P.S. your neighbors should take notes ;)
The toasted ravioli (same recipe since 1938) is the best I have ever had. Staff is extremely friendly.
We were supposed to be here for a paint nite and it was canceled unbeknownst to customers and mama's employees. We were upset but I tell you, Nate the bartender made the best of it and waited on everyone who came thru the door in hopes to be painting. Drinks were delectable and service was exceptional. Thank you for making a disappointment into a success!
Good food, good prices, decent service, very low lighting.
The best Italian food I've ever had. Everything on the menu is fantastic. I'm particular to the lasagna, toasted ravs, and pizza.
The service was outstanding the food was unbelievable delicious I would recommend calling ahead for reservations
We were here for my birthday and our server Lauren was absolutely the best!!!! Food was great. Service was the BEST
Although the food was terrific this rating is also for the amazingly accommodating service I received after leaving a bag of gifts under my table. When I realized my error and called they could not have been more helpful. When they realized my flight home was early am and I was already back at my hotel downtown, they graciously offered to deliver my package personally!! Still in awe of the "family" like service. I highly recommend this restaurant not just for those awesome calamari or veal, but in this cynical world how refreshing to find service above and beyond!! Thank you Mamas on the Hill!!
Classic Italian. Well made, adequately served in a pleasant setting.
This is the absolute best restaurant on the Hill. The food is great and the staff is friendly
I was very impressed with Mama's. We started with the toasted ravioli. They were delicious. Then I ordered the chicken parm, which was great. My wife ordered the lasagna, and it was probably the best lasagna I have ever tasted. The server was great, and the food portions were huge. It was a great lunch. Grade A. Can't wait to visit STL again and come here to eat.
Went back to Mama's for Sunday lunch on 8-14. We ordered and split Pasta Con Broccoli and toasted ravs. It was great stuff. The only negative was the music. They were playing a local radio station with 80's songs. I like Wham and The Go-Go's just like the next guy (Ha) but would prefer some older music, Sinatra, etc, when you are eating italian on the Hill. Someone did smartly change music about 30 minutes later, because it was killing the mood.
Other than that minor detail, the meal was great.
The veal marsala and the pasta that I tried were both amazing! They both had amazing flavor and tasted very authentic. The restaurant also uses a phone app called GiftAMeal which let me donate 2 free meals, just by snapping a pic of my food through the app; I thought that was really neat. I will definitely be back!
Great place and excellent food! Seafood Ravioli is super creamy and plenty of seafood on the sauce
The Papa's tortellini good as well!
I'm going to suggest they bring a expresso coffee machine, truly needed in a place like this.
Portions are above the regular size , more than enough to take home
Nate was our server this evening. He was the perfect level of attentive to our table and had wonderful recommendations. The food here was delicious and very large portion sizes. I had the Penne Vodka and it was the best vodka sauce I have had. Everyone was wonderful and created a great atmosphere. Stealer customer service! If you are in the area this place is definitely worth stopped to eat! They have a great wine and drink list as well.
The food and wine are excellent. Family atmosphere is ready for all. Did I say the food is REALLY GOOD?!!
Was there on a Sunday afternoon, glad to see a place open for a late lunch. Had the Veal Marsala and loved it. You gotta love the garlic. Wish I had more time to spend on the Hill to explore other places and would come back to Mama's anytime
So we have lived here since February and just now made it to The Hill neighborhood to eat. Mama's on the Hill is amazing. Our server Tommy was hilarious and very informative on all the dishes available. I had the Vitello Gabriella "veal" all I can say is wow. My husband had the Rabbit Bolognese and my daughter had the veggie pizza. But out of everything we ate it was the toasted ravioli that blew us away. Will be back again very soon.
Went to Mama's on Easter 2016 with my family and it was delicious ! Fantastic buffet, service great and comfortable seating. The Hill has many great places and this is certainly on of them! The inside is nice for the family.
The food was really good but we made a reservation and then found out that they hadnt even written it down and we had to wait on a table longer than expected.
The atmosphere here is wonderful, and quiet. It gives one a warm feeling, even though the A/C is on full blast during the summer, haha. I had the Seafood Linguini, which was creamy and well portioned, with decently sized scallops and shrimp. My group was well treated with frequent refills and even a water pitcher given to the table. Our servers did not make much conversation, but we're otherwise attentive. I would come back for sure.
Cozy Italian place with good food and excellent service. Claims to be the originator of the T Rav, and they were delicious!
Great place to eat for that authentic taste of home. Parking can be tricky but worth the journey.
Lots of great places to eat on the hill and this is one of the best! You have to try their toasted ravioli! The waiter said they invented it- a true stl staple!
This authentic Italian food is absolutely the best I have come to enjoy during my years of travel.
Bread and butter was great, and the thin crispy crust pizza must of had fresh everything. Just an outstanding staff that paid a genuine attention to my satisfaction.
Great job from kitchen to table. I hope I travel this way again.
We decided to try lunch at Mama's because Zia's only allowed reservations for a party of six or more. It turned out to be a great decision! There was a large party in the lower level, so we were seated by the window upstairs. I had Seafood Linguini (very creamy & yummy with a red crawdad on top), my daughter had Fettuccini Alfredo (she said mine was tastier), the men had Lasagna, Spaghetti & Meatballs and Penne Arrabiata. They thoroughly enjoyed their entrees. The portions are large and two of us needed to go boxes. Our waiter was very polite, funny & professional. The waiter & busboy were attentive and the food arrived quickly, No issues to speak of.
This has to be the best Italian food I have ever had. Loved it.
Had a coupon and live nearby so decided to order food for carryout. With two meals and an app they said it would be ready in 10 minutes which seemed crazy fast but it was ready and fresh. They even kept my salad separate since it was cold.
Loved the house salad, was nice to get more than iceberg in the lettuce mix and the house balsamic was excellent and a pleasant change from the standard italian.
Got the penne carbonara which was delicious! Large portion, super rich but that is what I was craving. BF got the chicken Alfredo and ate every last bite. The GCB was pretty standard, wished it used mozzarella instead of provel but that's just a personal preference. I've had the toasted rav here before too and was very good.
Will definitely come back.
Ohhh this place makes me so glad that I am moving to St. Louis. Great great place.
I have wanted to go here since my dad told me how amazing it was. He passed since and my husband knew I have always wanted to go, so he took me there for my early birthday dinner. The calimari was awesome!!! Our first server was not great she even brought me out the wrong order completely. I didn't get to eat with my hubby because of it, however she left n we got a new server he was amazing. My hubby got the pizza it was good, I got the seafood manicotti it was good but wld of been better in a bigger serving for the price. All in all we enjoyed it only major issue was her getting my order wrong and my husband being done with his food before mine came out. We will be back and request the gentlemen that finished serving us.
Service was great. Our waiter was very nice and personable. The sauces were wonderful on both of our dishes. The only thing lacking was the decor and who really cares!
We go there every time we shop on the Hill, usually on Saturday's. My wife and I have lunch and always have the same waiter, Guy.He is so good to us it feels like a special date. We usually get the special if he suggests it. Very good food, good drinks, great service! It is our special place.
The food is terrific!! We had the crab stuffed mushrooms, the calamari, rabbit bolgonese, and pizza. All of it was extremely tasty and filling. My kiddos both had the spaghetti, with meatballs of course. They were fully satisfied, as well! An entire family happily fed. We will patron again!
We were there for Fathers Day 2015, It was one of the best Fathers Day meals I have had in a while. The service was outstanding and the drinks were also very good, My wife had a dish that she loved. We do not get to St. Louis that often but we will make STOP AT Mamas next time.
Probably my favorite Italian place to eat at on the Hill. Its small but the food is excellent and the prices are pretty cheap. I also hope to try their pasta challenge in the near future.
We loved the handmade toasted ravioli. My husband had the Pasta Arrabiata and I had the Gamberoni Scampi. We split my salad which was bigger than the little plate they served it on. Wow! He loved the slight spiciness and I loved the spinach, mushrooms and large lightly Parmesan breaded shrimp. The lemon butter sauce was amazing. Good thing we had bread to get every last drop! They also served a special dessert for Valentine's Day.
I choose Mama's on the Hill for a couples Valentine dinner . We'd never been to this place so I didnt know what to expect. We entered and was greeted by the hostess, the place was busy with food being delivered to various tables. Happy faces....good sign. I choose this restaurant for dinner and was hoping it would be a good choice. Our group of 8 was to be seated down stairs , not a fan of not being on the main floor but thats okay ! Once seated our waiter greeted us and was very kind and informative with the daily specials. We ordered , getting appetizers , salads , bread and then our entrees . Everything was great !! All dishes were hot, delicious and prompt . They even have a 2 pound meatball challenge. Eat the whole thing and its free. Prices are good . I absolutely recommend going !!!
Straight up fantabulous! I was in St. Louis for the weekend, visiting friends and decided to check out Mama's after they had mentioned it had been on Restaurant Impossible and.....just wow! The fried ravioli was exactly what they dish should be and the best I've had, the rabbit bolognese was something I had never tried and my mouth is drooling thinking about it now. My favourite part of the experience? The prices were more than reasonable and the company was the best.
Great service, amazing food and it will be my go to the next time I'm in St. Louis.
Impressed! This was a dinner with friends, and they chose it. I am glad they did.
Great service, even better food. The pollo saltimbocca was just perfect. Huge portions; I ended up walking out with the telltale styrofoam box.
We did have crab-stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer which were awesome... and I'm not even a mushroom fan!
I didn't pay, so I can't speak to the price/value aspect, but I would say just from the menu, it was in line with a good, solid dinner.
Approved. :-)
Guys, this is hands down the best Italian food I have ever tasted. The servers were friendly and kept up a running conversation throughout the night. They even knew most of our group by name from previous visits.
The Penne Carbonara had a delicious cream sauce. You know the problem that most Italian restaurants have where there is not enough cream sauce to cover a dish? This is absolutely not the case at Mama's. Every bite was creamy perfection.
We will definitely be back for more!
Best around...enough said!
Located in the heart of The Hill, Mama's is the best value for genuine Italian cuisne in St. Louis. Known as the home of Toasted Ravioli, Mama's delivers some of the largest portions of old world classics I have seen. In their family operated attmosphere, they are always glad to see you, a water/wine glass never goes empty, and NO is not in their vocabulary.
Italian
Another great choice for dining out, Italian! On "The Hill", you will never go wrong. Everything is wonderful. A quaint little restaurant, comfortable, good service, laid back atmosphere.
Wonderful start to finish
This has to be the BEST Italian restaurant on the hill!!!! We were greeted at the door with a smile, seated immediatly, Outstanding service, Food was Extrordianry!!! Ended the evening at the beautiful bar with an espresso... Very warm and friendly would Highly recommend to EVERYONE!!!!! Thank-You Mama Campisis for such a wonderful evening. There will be many more I am sure!!!!
WOW!!!! OUTSTANDING!!!!
Thank-You for an outstanding evening. We visited the restaurant on a sunday evening, about 6pm the restaurant was full and people were waiting. But no one seemed to miss a beat. We were treated like we were the only ones in the restaurant, not only by the employees but also by the owners who seemed to take great pride in what they were doing, They introduced themselves to us and visited our table several times. This was extra nice, you don't see that very often anymore. Service was wonderful and the food was great! Mama Campisis you are GREAT...
delicious food
Mama Campisis is one of the many great restaurants on The Hill that you just can't seem to go wrong at. I have taken interviewees for my school to this restaurant, and it was one of the few places that everybody enjoyed the meal they ordered. This restaurant is definetly on the list of places to go back to over and over.
Highly recomended
We went on a weekday afternoon. My wife and I each had a pasta dish and my daughter had calimari. The waiter was very friendly,As far as being crowded,it was an oof peak hour on a weekday afternnon but they were very accomodating as far as were we would like to sit and all.
Very good food, very fair price. We spent less than $30 and took leftovers home.
Looks like a little hole in a wall, but wow.
This little place looks like a hole in a wall. When the food was brought out, I could not believe my eyes nor my taste buds. Portions are huge and very flavorful. I ended up having left overs, which does not happen often. The sauce was to die for. Do not plan to come here on a Sunday, you will be disappointed. Check the hours before going, and get directions.
Jersey to St. Louiy
Came to Mamas while in St. Louis on a business trip. With being from New Jersey, New York and family in Brooklyn I'm use to incredible Italian food! But I have to tell you Mama's is over the top good!! I normally do not write reviews but felt compelled to do so after an incredible evening, we were greeted prompltly at the door, taken to our table then server arrived ready to get our drinks and giving us mouth watering descriptions of the specials..
We started with toasted ravioli and Italian nachos...(yummy) mamas house salad.--- please get that dressing bottled want to get some sent home to the family--chicken spedini-- what can I say never had anything like it.. would highly recommend to EVERYONE!!!! and a simple dish spaghetti and meatballs--Love the marinara sauce so much better than most places sauce.. could tell it was fresh with the tomato chuncks.. throughout the meal eatting the fresh slice Italian bread and seasoned olive oil on the table... Finishing this incredible meal seemed a pitty so we took a peak at the dessert tray and topped it off with the tiramisu... Staying in a hotel normally a bad idea to bring left overs back, but YES again another exception. all I can say is thanks and BRING MAMAS TO JERSEY!!!!!!
Italian at its Best!
I dine here with my family as frequently as I/we possibly can. I can assure you this is a first class place, with exceptional owners who go out of their way to make sure you have a wonderful dining experience.
These cyber bullies truly need to stop with all of these hateful, false comments not only are they hurtful to the owners and employees but also the guests that enjoy going here! We do take this personally and if it does not stop I will take a personal interest in finding out who you are and prosecuting you to the fullest extent of the law.
Mama Campisis many blessings and much success!!
Great place to dine for a good price
My husband I I went there last night and it was wonderful. We were greeted at the door by the owner, and she was happy to seat us with a smile. We had a wonderful table by the window showing how pretty The Hill really is. Our waiter Mike was great, he was very helpful and had some interesting facts about the hill and the restaurant. There was a guy going around singing old Senatra hits and it was great and added to the whole night. When our food came out it took my breath away, the portions were huge! We had the cheese sticks... I know I know. but i was told they were good and a must try so we did. And they were great! Made from provel instead of the normal cheese, it was like biting into butter!
I had the chicken spidini and it was a giant chicken breast with cheese, spices and prochutto rolled inside. amazing!
My husband had the steak which came with a butter on top as a garnish this was nothing less than perfection.
The whole night was perfect! Thank you Mama!
Amazing time
Upon walking in the door to this place I was greeted by the owner of the restaurant. She introduced me to her husband and he eldest child working as a busser. She showed me pictures of the rest of her family, all the while making me feel at home and as a part of her family. She made me feel like I have been coming to this restaurant for years, when in fact, this was my first visit.
"The Hill's" Best Italian!
My husband and I were trying to find an italian place for our wedding Anniversary on The Hill. We found Mama Campisi's..WOW.....what a great experience! The atmosphere was soooo nice and friendly. Our server was excellent. I ordered the
Momma Campisis
If you go on a weekend you will be met at the door by a gentleman that signs in the restaurant. he will entertain you with Sinatra, Dean Martin and Tony Benett. it is quite an experience. the staff are very polite and the food is excellent. This is my restaurant oh the Hill!!!
Excellent food at a very fair price
Mama's is a bit of a throwback.
Don't waste your time
Just one word....CRAP!!!
Unbelievable!
I have never written a review before but after tonight feel its nessasary to pass this along. I had to put one star to publish this review otherwise it would be zore stars. I cannot rate the food at Mama Campisi's since I never got it.
Our Visit on March 24th
I too have never taken the time to write a review before also! We were at Mama Campisi on March 24th too. We were a party of 4. We waited for a table for 20 min, which on a sat night is not bad! we first went to Zia's, but the wait was
AWESOME
I loved this place. The food was delicious and the staff was amazing! I had the chicken spidini and it was out of this world good! My husband had the steak and said it was the best steak he has ever had! Good job Mama!
I've been going here for years and still love it.
I've been going to Mama Campisi's since the late 80's. It's still my favorite place.

Good and bad. First off the food was better than average. Toasted ravs are great, salad is very good, main courses (there were five of us) were good to above average. Definitely no complaints with the food! Now for the bad. Sam was our waiter. In the best of times we all suspected he would be a mediocre waiter. But due to a shortage of servers he was waiting on 8 tables. We were very understanding for we were there to have a good time. What set us off was that as he was presenting our bill, after a long wait for it, he apologized and said we should tip accordingly for the service we received. I still tipped $25. As we went outside my wife asked how the bill could have been so much. She went back in and discovered that a $28 tip had already been added to our bill. We felt VERY deceived about this scam. We may go back but I will be watching them very closely.
Mama Campisi's- for my review please see tipsnfavs.com
This is one of the best places we've found at the Hill. Love the atmosphere, service and the superb Italian food. The Toasted Ravioli's are scrumptious and house made. The salad is perfectly blended with Italian dressing, Provel cheese, artichoke hears and lots more. We've tried the lasagna, Chicken Parma, Tortellini, Ravioli's... It's all good. Oh - And they have the best Tiramisu in St. Louis. Gotta check it out!

The atmosphere was soooo nice and friendly. Our server was excellent. I ordered the chicken spedini and my husband had a steak, both were unbelievable! In fact our server threw in a FREE dessert for our anniversary! When your anniversary come up go straight to the Hill to Mama Campisi's!
Excellent food at a very fair price Mama's is a bit of a throwback.
If you want very good, traight-ahead Italian as most Americans have come to expect it and don't put an emphasis on atmosphere, then Mama's is really excellent.
The Chicken Spendini is notably famous and very generous. The pastas are nicely done traditional pasta dishes, the pizza is thin crust, but not St. Louis style.
The Calamari we had for $7.95 as an app kept four of us busy for quite a while.
The surroundings are not fancy, the servers are approachable and friendly, but the pace can be a bit hectic, so if you want a more upscale experience, there are better choices for you.
If you want very good Italian at a very fair price, Mama's is an excellent choice.

It did take 15 min to get our appitzer! Our salads did come right after we finished it, so things were going good so far.... Then we were waiting for our food, when i asked what was taking so long, our waiter when and got the manager. She came right over and explained they had an unexspected emergenancy with one of the cooks. She must have said she was sorry ten times in talking with us. We did get our food after about an hour. I have to say it was amazing! This was our first time there, but the other couple we were with, had been there many times before! They kept telling us, something must be wrong, we have NEVER waited this long before!! When we did finish our meal, and the server brought us the bill, the manager took 50% off. I did call the owner the next day and talked to her also, then i relized, only when something is bad, do people ever call or write about it!! The owner too was aware of what happen Sat night. She also said, this has never happen! So, even tho we did wait along time for our food and the restaurent did have a bad night, I would like to Stress, the food was the Best i have had in a long time!! The management, server, were very upset and doing what they could to please everyone! I will be going back because, I do believe this had to be a one time bad night for Mama Campisis! I will be coming back!!!
Wonderful experience
My fianc'e and I were hungry while touring the hill and found Mama Campisi's. The owner greeted us at the door with a smile and we were seated right away. The prices were wonderful as the portions, we left paying less than $30 and with a doggy bag. The chicken lasagana was the best thing I have ever tasted. And the staff was wonderfully attentive. In the spring we have now decided to have Mama cater our wedding and to have the reception in their banquet hall. We could not be more happy with out experience!!!!!!!!!
Food is great. Atmosphere is just so so. I didn't care for the 70/80's radio station playing, killed the ambience. But the food was very good, so I would come back.
The waiter was great. Funny, they just put on some standard Italian music as we are leaving, which I love. Haha
I've never written a Yelp review before, I usually just poach the reviews and make my selection based of what I read, but I felt this was an exception.
Mama's was my first taste of Italian food in the St Louis area after relocating from Texas, and I was not disappointed. To begin I called in the order to go, and the waiter on the phone, Guy was very helpful. Upon picking up my order the restaurant looked like a cozy mom and pop Italian eatery that was full on a Sunday night.
I ordered the Pollo Spedini as it was a house special. To start the house salad was great, the lettuce was crisp and the dressing was a perfect compliment to the bountiful ingredients in the salad. To my delight Guy even included a bag of bread and butter which was a great touch of service.
For the chicken - amazing. The sauce was a little creamy but packed full of flavor. The stuffed chicken had just the slightest hint of a bacon and potato taste which went well with the savory sauce. The chicken was moist all the way through and cut easily with one finger on a kitchen knife. Each bite was as good as the one before and kept me coming back. My side of red pasta went great with the dish as the sweet (but not overly sweet) red sauce went perfectly with the savory chicken. Some dishes with mushrooms can turn over "mushroomy" but not this one. Everything went together perfectly.
For the portions, where can I begin. I'm an avid weightlifter and carry an enormous appetite, and Mommas filled me up to the brim. For my first experience of Italian on The Hill I don't know if I'll ever need to try another place. Thanks for the welcome to St Louis Mommas, I'll see you soon.
I used grub hub for delivery tonight. We had fettuccine alfredo, spaghetti, stuffed bread, and desserts were cheesecake and cannoli. Everything was absolutely delicious!! We will be making Mama's a regular spot for dinner.
Such a nice surprise. Tucked away in the middle of a residential neighborhood, this restaurant is in an old house. This is the type of place that you know immediately when you walk up and in that you're in for a treat.
The service was exceptional and true Italians own and run the joint. Started with the fried ravioli which was tasty. Had the Pollo Spedini which is basically chicken rolled and stuffed with prosciutto, mushrooms, cheese and other amazing was and topped with a savory sauce and baked. It was rich and delicious. Though one order could feed three people. We also had the Seafood Manicotti which we polished the plate clean. The marinara sauce with the pasta was memorable, and all homemade.
Highly recommend taking the time to find this hidden gem. Skip the chain restaurants and drive an extra ten minutes to have real food!
From what I can tell, there are approximately 800 thousand million Italian restaurants in "The Hill" in St. Louis. While I can't speak for the other ones, as I haven't really eaten at any of them, I can tell you that Mama's is a solid choice.
The ambiance is alright. It feels somewhat home-y, and is mostly dependent upon a few windows for light.
The service was fine. Our waiter was kind and pretty attentive.
Of course, none of the above would matter if the food sucked. Thankfully, it does not. I had a Caesar salad and "The Hill" of Spaghetti with two meatballs. No complaints on the salad, though it was fairly standard. The red sauce on the spaghetti and meatballs was smooth and tomato-y. The spaghetti itself was tasty (and plentiful), but possibly could've been seasoned a little more. The meatball was meaty (which should make sense), but also could've been seasoned a tad more. Overall, though, it was good. My siblings seemed pleased with what they ordered, as well.
Be forewarned, however: the portion sizes are HUGE! Come hungry, because chances are good that you will consume far more calories than you originally anticipated.
But overall, again, it was very good.
We decided to come back to Mama's for my Mother's Day lunch. The first time we were here was several years ago, and I was in the mood for some Italian today. Unfortunately (or fortunately, however you look at it), most of the restaurants on The Hill are closed on Sundays. This narrowed our choices greatly, and we decided to come back to a tried-and-true restaurant.
Since it was Mother's Day, they did have a brunch happening, but we decided to order off the regular menu anyway. Our four choices: spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parm, penne carbonara, and cannelloni. Everyone enjoyed his/her meal.
I tried my daughter's penne carbonara, because it is also one of my favorites. SO good! I had the cannelloni, which was perfect!
We'll be back. It's not a fancy place, but the service is good and the food is great!
3.5 starts seems about right but I'll up it to four. We visited for the first time for my wife's birthday and to my absolute amazement when we walked in at 7:30pm on a Thursday night we were the ONLY patrons in there, I was absolutely stunned and I felt like I was walking into a place just about to close down or something. Immediately I was nervous because I thought maybe I missed a breaking news story about the establishment giving the town dysentery and I was the only guy who didn't read the papers.
I have to say though the food I ordered really was excellent and slowly (really slowly) two more tables of 2 arrived to make us feel a little better. Our service was good and attentive.
I had the Penne Carbonara and my wife had the Chicken Parmigiana (without this Provel stuff, Mozzarella only please) and I had a toasted rav. to begin. All excellent.
I really would like to return here but next time with a few more souls in the place to give it some life.
Started with the toasted ravioli which was excellent! Salad was crisp and the home made Italian dressing was light and tangy. Chicken with artichokes had an excellent cream sauce, and the chicken was sliced very thin. The veal parmigiana was awesome served with a shell pasta and a marinara sauce. Was good but would have preferred linguine or spaghetti.
Finally had a dessert of the day - chocolate pears with pumpkin gelato. SO good.
Definitely worth the trip!!!
This review is only for take out. We were visiting from Nashville and before leaving town we decided to grab some Italian food to go. Believe it or not, Nashville does not have great Italian food. We have some, but we don't have the shops like St. Louis or New Jersey.
Mama's was wonderful and absolute delight! We got home, reheated the food, and ate on the couch in bliss. Their toasted raviolis lived up to the hype. The spaghetti and meatballs was perfection, and the chicken parm with provel cheese was surprisingly delightful. I was in love. IN LOVE! I'm so sad Mama's is in St. Louis and not Nashville. I would go there regularly. They ship their pasta in from Italy. They mean business!
Mama's has great food for any occasion. This authentic Italian restaurant will fulfill any crave for traditionally prepared pasta, meat and seafood. Try their cooking classes they are a great time!
Great food, huge portions. This was my first time being here and I couldn't have been more pleased. The wait staff was very quick to take orders and very friendly.
Definitely recommend this place to anyone
